Great post GRANGERSITE.
In this setting, even if you kill someone, it is merely painful, inconvenient, and potentially ego-bruising. That's it. I'm almost surprised that violence isn't the first response more often since it has little long-term repercussions.
Dressing someone down, belittling them in front of their peers, and making a joke of them is a worse punishment than merely killing them, since that can last for days, weeks, or years as a source of ridicule and teasing.
Like I said in the necromancer thread, merely killing another character is letting them off easy.

Actually, in the context of a game, you are absolutely right. I was thinking more in the context of playability of roles within the game.

<<Physical combat is an escalation of verbal sparring>>
One you should expect given the setting.
<<so utterly provocative and inflamatory as to "cause" the ensuing conflict and killing?>>
Yes. That's the risk you take when your character insults another - even one you see as rude and deserving.
<<cannot be resisted by an otherwise reasonable person>>
Point me to the rule that says all Dragonrealms characters must be RPed as reasonable, rational individuals, and I'll show you half a dozen who break it.
<<such little self control/self esteem/etc. that he seeks the gratification of violence>>
It takes a lot more self-control to successfully roleplay around consent policy than it does to hide behind it.
If you're going to go ahead and assume no RP on the side of the attacker, you should assume no RP on the part of the victim, in which case it all comes down to policy - which means if you don't want someone to kill you, don't give them consent to do so. A reasonable person would be able to handle that.

I know this is DR and death happens, but I think a lot of minor conflicts within the game would be better dealt with a challenge rather than all out war between the parties. If someone insults my character IG first of all I would try turnaround and if it escalated it would be as much their doing as mine. It should result in a challenge before attempting to kill IMO but some people might jump the gun and just go for the kill and depending on the result you can either kick some dirt on their corpse, try to get revenge right away, add them to your list, or let it go if you can. Beating your head against a wall is never a good idea. It is all dependent on the situation and the person you are dealing with.
Sure not every one has to RP killing as a last option for minor conflicts but in my opinion death should be regarded with some amount of significance IC if not OOC. It adds weight to situations.

May not want to hang around with Kasrkyn then, he's usually up for new and interesting ways to die, often refers ressurection as "shoving souls into bodies" and jokes about accidently using squirrel souls for rezzing.

In my opinion the fiction of the setting doesn't really support this unless it is walking the starry road/fading/returning to the wheel.
Seriously. A death when you have favor with the gods/demons is no worse than getting blackout drunk and the resulting hangover.
The worst thing about dying in DR is that you might lose a precious weapon.

Don't let your mouth write checks that you can't cash...or something like that.
Everyone has a verbal abuse breaking point, in DR or in real life. In DR the acceptable breaking point should be, and is much lower then in real life.
I mean seriously, you think you should be able to walk up to someone and call them a motherless son of a working girl and that their guild is a joke and their guild leader should be hung and NOT get attacked?

No, but you should always be able to respond in kind without being attacked. You shouldn't be attacked for addressing another in the same manner that he is addressing you. It's those who have the "You can't speak to me that way, but I'll feel free to speak to you that way" attitude that I have a problem with.
Don't dish out what you ain't willing to take.

Roleplaying that your character's personal sense of ethics guides you to treat your favors with respect is a whole different story, but the immortals don't seem to care one way or the other.
I'd love to see a reference in the lore where the immortals even care. So far it seems to take necromancy to have the gods care enough to strip you of favor.

Not all disagreements rp-wise need to end up in a conflict of might makes right. Not long ago Purnay and I got into a rather heated discussion about politics he is loyal to the Baron and I the Queen this is not a good mix on the best of days. That said we were both in Zoluren and honestly when you are visiting another province I believe that you should leave the "I am gonna kill you for your beliefs" attitude in your home province. Now if the Baron or Queen was present that would be another story all together. Our interaction could have led to blows, it did not.
I think may folks who outclass others are quick to kill sometimes, its thier choice though to do so. I neither agree or disagree with this attitude as there are situations in which I do not have the time for a long conversation and have just killed someone.
The other day in the ranger guild I had an empath get in my face about kicking her pile. ( I will admit that I did not mean to kick her pile.) I told her she should have better manners in addressing an elder of the guild that she is currently in. She proceeded to mouth off futher and be insulting to boot. I thumped her for her trouble. And informed her removal would be next.
Now knowing I totally out class this individual it would have been easy for me to kill them, I personally find no great pleasure in a kill that is not even remotely a challenge. Not to mention I detest blood shed in the guild, though I have been known to spill a drop here or there.

Challenge is a way to beat someone up for insulting you without killing them. I wish there were customizable options for the messaging for when the challenge is issued. Instead of "I challenge you to the pain in a contest of skill" you could have it say "steps up to you and says "I am going to beat you to within an inch of your life for saying that"", or whatever. Options are good.

<<You can roleplay it that way if you want but I can also roleplay that the immortal in which I have favor doesn't take it lightly if I burn through them like cheap cigarettes on a friday night at the bar>>
Having a character consider death a serious matter is valid roleplay, however you need to remember that other characters may not share this view and adjust accordingly. My character has killed (NPCs) and died too many times to put much significance in death, but at the same time doesn't kill without a reason, preferring to challenge instead.
<<"You can't speak to me that way, but I'll feel free to speak to you that way" attitude that I have a problem with.>>
Might very often makes right in the setting you're choosing to play in. It doesn't mean that attempting to kill another character should be the first response to an insult, but it does mean that having a bunch of arbitrary rooms where violence is suddenly and inexplicably not an option is jarringly OOC and unnecessary.
So it comes down to this: if you don't want to play with violent characters, why on earth are you playing with violent characters? What's forcing you to interact with them at all?

Get rid of safe rooms no need for them. I would keep a few no-steal rooms however just for playability. (Bank, trader tables) people who come into the room and start killing folks won't be doing it for long if they don't have consent.
Futhermore don't pop off to someone unless you are prepared for them to react. Real example Kesari sassed Issus on the gweths. He said if she sassed him again he would kill her. She opted not to respond because she was in the middle of running routes and death would have mucked that up. Just because someone issues a threat/challenge doesn't mean you have to rise to them. No amount of safe rooms will save you from your own stupidity.

I don't know what that does. And I still have to jump through the challenge to the pain in a contest of skill bullhockey after. I don't know why it couldn't be freeform. It is less dorky and atmosphere wrecking to step up to someone and say "ok lets do it then" or something like that in one fluid motion. There you go, challenge issued; the game mechanic integrated with the roleplay.

A bit late to this thread, but I'll give my piece.
depart arrival rooms
primary triage places (and I do mean primary, places that see hundreds of dead and dying people per day, every day. Not just places primary in occasional invasions.)
Certain parts of Empath's Guilds (for example, in the Crossing Guild, the Healerie and the Infirmary. Very much definitely the Healerie at minimum.)
Banks. Investment centers of the entire provinces. Loads of guards.
gem shops/furriers, trader shipment rooms, bazaar (violence but no-steal would be acceptable I suppose). Places Traders HAVE to be at with coin, and usually for some amount of time, no ifs or buts about it. They have to be there with coin to do their thing.
Festivals. It's a festival, not a war zone.
guild leader rooms
As others have said, generally places where there's a VERY strong legal/military force that isn't going to be kindly to killing/stealing shenanigans.

I'd prefer to see the only safe rooms being depart spots. Other rooms should have justice mechanics to make things like stealing harder to represent more guards in the area rather than just being impossible.
