Hey everyone. Just wanted to get your feedback. What do you think of the December promotion for Troubled Waters? What would make it perform better? Is the aspect of catching a Spirit Beast not alluring

For me personally... not really. Maybe for others.

I did a lot of runs (6 all told) in November, and that sort of burnt me out. I had a couple prizes that I wanted and so pushed for them. I think that if there was some way the quest could be a LITTLE more dynamic on repeat runs, it might work. I understand that many of these (quests in general) aren't intended to be so.... grindy... but honestly this quest is set up that many runs have to be done if you want the higher end stuff, so it get's a little repetitive.

Also... I normally do my Mage with an Empath, and we got a really good system down (Reliably getting 140+ scrip). I do a lot of the damage, and he keeps us healed and only does defensive incanting (he's also primary basher since he's edged trained, so he doesn't have to worry about DS while bashing). Neither of us can survive in hard RT at our level in an offensive stance. We tried to invite a ranger friend (all told the group only spanned ten levels) and things didn't work out so well for her, and it really tanked our scrip. Something about the way the quest scales on spawns and difficulty makes it really hard to add a single target DPS character, because if we stick together we have to regularly deal with 6-8+ monsters spawning at a time, and at that many spawns, sometimes you don't even have time to flee (especially if she's in hard RT, when we're in soft RT we can flee/drag/etc. without reservation). Don't have a good suggestion there, are we supposed to spread out more (I'd heard you need to kill together to get best rewards).

Anyway... I think the final point of that is that she had a bad experience with it, and from what we can tell, unless everybody in the group can handle large groups (either by having lots of AoE or by being able to fight in high DS stances) we're having a hard time how we'd add more people.

I might start again in January, but December honestly has too darn much to be doing anyway (have you looked at the calendar? Where am I supposed to put TW runs AND sleeping?)

I think to summarize... for better or worse... I do the runs as a means to get the reward, not because it's fun. It was fun the first and second times, because we were learning and we feel accomplishment in learning to do something well.

Same reason we enjoyed the Necropolis, we got to learn how to not die. Once you learn it, it becomes a grind. Some sort of dynamic puzzle could extend the life.

I am trying to do the runs to find my special spirit beast. That is what pulled me to do more! However, the last run I went on I was rushed through it at the end and didn't have the chance to even looked beyond 2-3 rooms near the schooner for my spirit beast. I'm going to try again. I want my rare pokebeast!

The biggest reason for me is that December is usually crazy busy. I did sign up for a run last week but ended up missing it due to connectivity issues. I'm going to have another run set up for sometime next week as I'm one run away from nabbing one of the big prizes that I was looking at.

As far as some of the other comments, here are my thoughts.. I really do enjoy running the quest with a group of folks. The problem is finding a group sometimes. I don't enjoy it as much when I run it solo, but I do still run it when there are prizes that I'm after. The loot is pretty good in a group, especially if you have someone who can open the boxes and you don't have to involve Larton. Solo I've found the loot to be unimpressive (not bad, just not WOAH), but that's mostly because I tend to limit out encumbrance-wise and can't carry everything off the boat. I like the spirit beast promotion because it is unique. I definitely plan on trying to nab one when I do my next run, but I'll need to get a talisman from someone. More stuff like this added to BSQ and NATA would probably get me to run those again as wel.

I personally think that part of the reason the number of runs is down is that people have either already gotten the prizes they want, or maybe they weren't interested in anything on the list this go around. Also, holiday and being busy. The rotating prize list is a huge plus to me for Troubled Waters. I know for a fact that at least in Platinum it keeps bringing a small group of us back onto the boat. I bet the same would be the case for BSQ and NATA if the prize lists were to get spruced up for those, or something unique like the spirit beasts were added to them.

Capped/near capped people should join Crux and me on the 4 pm Sunday run.

someone on LNET last week said something about being grabbed an hour before they were supposed to due to some sort of system time bug. has this been fixed?

You need to make sure that you are going by the time on the box office, rather than the time on the in-game QUEST verb.

I'll see if we can just disable the in game reference.

Yeah, something happens with our time system. Even after getting it working to display Eastern, something just defaults back into Central. I've tried too long to figure out what happens. But I'll just rest in my status quo bubble.

maybe it's too attached to the servers in St. Louis. Like changing the time on any workstation attached to a server, then rebooting the workstation and it goes back to server time. Odd it's not attached to the TIME verb.

With skull rings, if you have one, you can now see the time it was attuned. I put code in skull rings to convert the time, and it still displayed as central. I had to give up because it was driving me nuts. Something crazy happens somewhere, and I wasn't able to take the crazy train to ask Ozzy what to do.

Personally I wasn't excited about the December promotion. The reasons being that capturing Spirit Beast creatures require skills that my Troubled Waters: Rescue at Sea character lacks. I could take a different character for the purpose of capturing a spirit beast but 1) my hunting partner doesn't have a suitable level character for this and 2) the black scrip is character bound so it would be a wasted trip from that perspective.

My hunting partner and I are still both enjoying the rescues missions as well as the rewards from Troubled Waters and we will likely be scheduling private runs this month and beyond but neither of us will be able to take advantage of the current promotion being offered.

In case people aren't aware, if you have the talisman prepared ahead of time.. no skill is required to actually capture creatures. My warrior in Plat only has like 17 ranks of MIU and could never successfully prepare a talisman, but if someone else did that piece for me, I had no problem capturing beasts.

Would the special Spirit Beast be more appealing if a talisman containing the beastie was won as part of your prize loot for every run?

That would be pretty awesome in my mind. I didn't realize how much fun the system was going to be, so I only picked up 2 talismans at EG. =(

Being over in plat, I'm not sure that we had anyone squirrel away enormous numbers of them for resale like typically happens in prime.

+1

A spirit beast might work as a draw for me on a new quest, but it isn't going to pull me back in on this one because scrip on the character it would pull in would be wasted.

I was (clearly) not aware of that! I assumed a similar amount of skill was required to catch spirit beasts as is required to create the talismans. I'll take a few talismans along and see how my 0 MIU, 20ish Perception Paladin does in capturing them then.

The quest is actually pretty good. I did 9 runs in 5 days for the thrill. Kinda' fun. I'd be happy though with either a twist to the current quest somehow or a better list of items available.

Twist
.Some additional challenge in some of the rooms;
.Another room on the boat that reveals itself;

Improved List

I looked at all the lists since the launch of this quest and with a few exceptions there's been nothing much I can use, nice as some of the items are. The orb was about it, and that was yanked. I'm waiting for the January list to see if there is anything appealing. Perhaps if questers can buy tokens for services rather than objects, without compromising the integrity of Premium subscription, then that might be appealing.' Something to consider for next year perhaps? (I'm already really missing the absence of the orb from the list.)

>>Is the aspect of catching a Spirit Beast not alluring.

Already got my spirit beast. My Tsark 'Fluffy' would not be happy sharing my attentions with siblings. I personally don't tend to emotionally invest in more than one character at a time and as such am never going to need more than 1 spirit beast for my 1 main character.

This, yes. My main would have a great deal of time catching the beast on his own and the character I do it on wouldn't benefit from the blackscrip. I was going to sign up, until this occurred to me. If it's something you get at the end, say like the siegery minis were, I'd buy a ticket today. If you leave it so you can still claim them during the run, to make the ones with plans to do so stay happy, but for the rest of us as an added incentive, I have no doubt you'd get a nice haul.

Could you make it anything like the introductory siegery mini? After two runs and not being able to find a single room, along with two other people looking as well, it's rather disappointing that the FAIL message kept overriding the VOID message and we couldn't find a single room that held the spirit... even after going through the hatch in the captain's cabin just to see.

I think it's awesome to have a Spirit Beast as an extra incentive, 'cause I love doing Troubled Waters and I love Spirit Beasts... but then, I may not be the best demographic to poll, because I'd totes be doing runs anyways for the kicks and the Spirit Beast is just a sweet, sweet bonus, heh.

Having said that though, yeah... Mae and the Vankrasnator and I did a run today, and had zero success finding any Spirit Beasts. We looked around a fair bit, too -- including the top deck, the middle deck, and even in the Captain's Room, Treasure Room, in the water outside the escape chute, and in some of the prisoner cells. I have 100+ MIU and pretty decent Summoning Lore [70] so I don't think that was a factor, although we did eventually figure out that the "can't detect anything" message for failure overrides the "void of any spirits" message, after comparing attempts. We did this during the last 20 minutes or so while fighting hordes of Krolvin, and I swear, it's like they knew we were looking and decided to throw the kitchen (galley?) sink at us at the last minute. On the up side, we did get maximum scripts for the countless hordes of raiders we slaughtered.

I'm not sure why the failure happened, save for maybe there were one or two rooms we didn't check due to running low on time... but I don't think that's it, we checked about every room I can think of that would seem logical, and most common beasts inhabit a fairly broad range of rooms within an area. Plus, the messaging made it seem as though there were no Spirit Beasts to be had in the general area. It looks like other people have succeeded, judging by what I've read, so I'm not sure what we were doing wrong... though this was my first December run, so I have no basis for comparison. Still pondering for a potential second run, though! I assume the promotion is for any and all December runs, yes?

As for Spirit Beasts as a capture opportunity versus given as bonus a prize: Personally, I like the idea of capturing them myself, because a) that just seems more in line with the feel and flavor of the system itself, and b) presumably this grants you the chance to capture more than one beast on a single run (say, for friends), which I also like, although I'm apparently not the one to ask about that. Har har. I do understand the concerns addressed previously about capture attempts and equal opportunity viability; to counterpoint though, I'd imagine that most runs have at least one person with the required skills that could capture the Spirit Beast for you, even if you can't, especially if you come with previously prepared talismans. It isn't particularly difficult to find someone to do it, as you can collect the blood yourself regardless of you skill set, and I believe you only need someone with a modicum of Summoning Lore to call and capture it. On the third hand, however, having this as a vehicle to get a talisman to play with even if you don't have the necessary means, time, or inclination could be a nice idea, as well.

My suggestion, if the talisman is switched to be a bonus item received -- like the miniatures previously -- would be to perhaps offer more runs in December, or perhaps extend the promotion to include January or even February to counteract the difference in limited availability per run (capturing as many as you can per run, versus one assured prize per run). Moving forward, I do generally love the idea of there being extra "bonus" prizes awarded periodically, much like the aforementioned miniatures -- I'd love to see more of these!
