Top Hats 10/26/2018 02:16 PM CDT
[Thurfel's Island]
Tall orange grass shaped in tight spirals covers the fine sand of this beach. The spring-like plants bounce upward with every passing breeze, the motion scattering the many tiny golden butterflies that are flittering about the stalks. You also see a bright green monkey and a wooden dock.
Obvious exits: east, southeast, northwest
>l monkey
You see a fairly typical green monkey.
He appears to be in good shape.
He has a jaunty yellow bowtie (worn), an elegant yellow top hat (worn), a vibrant yellow jacket (worn) and an iron-tipped wooden cane.

(OOC) GM's player whispers, "Unfortunately top hats are not allowed."

Can a GM explain the issue here with requesting a top hat when monkeys spawn with top hats of varying colors?

Top hats have been considered too modern. I fixed the monkeys.

I would have preferred it to go the other way. Monkeys have been around for what, 20 years?

We also have how many couches in the game, and their history starts around the 1700's.

Top hats are one of those things I consider "old enough" to be okay.

Feather boas -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feather_boa -- 1800's

Origin of the word pants -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/pants-word-origin -- 16th century
Alter 5 says 15th century or older.

First known use of the word Tricorne -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tricorne -- 1857
- These have been approved and are just as old as "top hats"

Just a few more words to remove...

Peg legs -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/peg%20leg -- Origin 1769
Duffel bags -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/duffel%20bag -- 1917
Blouse -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/blouse -- 1823
Tote -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tote -- 1772
Tattoo -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tattoo -- 1777
Backpack -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/backpack -- 1897
Haversack -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/haversack -- 1711
Rucksack -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/rucksack -- 1853
Cravat -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cravat -- 1656

All of these things should be considered too modern if we're nitpicking specific words and the words origin.

I doubt a top hat is going to make people blink in a game with airships and steampunk items. Clearly it's a new kind of headgear invented by the half-elves.

The timeline is roughly 1780s for word origins. There are some exceptions. Top hats have not been allowed for a long time though.

How did doughnuts make it?

As I gaze over the horizon, the wind tugs at my cloak and whispers, "Adventure" in my ear.

Whick's body sways back and forth for a bit.

I got this one! Doughnuts (and donuts) transcend time and space.

QC standards have changed over the years. Doughnuts have been in game as long as I can remember. There are a lot of silly things out there. All I know is, top hats come up every so often and they are always shot down. So are fedoras. Gnomes opened up a lot of modern terms. Pirates opened a lot of the 1700s. It's not a never, but for now it's not something QC will budge on.

The top hat discussion made me think of Jeeves.

I do not remember if he even wore a hat, does anyone have a snapshot of his attire?

"Doughnuts have been in game as long as I can remember." -- Wyrom

And some times GMs get silly... and then forget.

I sort of want to say it was when Shattered was first opened, but apparently a GM had changed the weapon profile of either a cudgel or a short sword on one of the low-level beasties to be "a quivering pink jelly <adult toy for sexual pleasure>" in the test/Dev instance, for some reason. (Probably to tease some other staffer.) (And thinking about it, it may have been 'throbbing' rather than 'quivering', too.)

Since they were watching the numbers rather than the words--after the first round of guffaws and giggles wore off--they totally forgot about it...

...and released those creatures into that instance, so armed.

.

Several 'reports', and a really loud, "Ooops", later... normality was restored.
