Serious bug with justice re: debts 08/09/2014 07:42 PM CDT

The sheriff looks you up and down, then scoffs, "Lemme tell you a little something about the way we run things here in Icemule Trace. Some folks git some idea 'bout a "jury of their peers" or some odd thing. Well, you can jest forget about that here. I'm the judge and the jury 'round this town."
The sheriff glances through some papers on his desk, then looks up and says, "Innocent stands before me accused of the following crimes..."

The sheriff says, "Innocent is charged with 1 count of murder. This 1 crime carries a total fine of 15480 silvers."

The sheriff glances at you and sneers, "Don't worry about the fine, it could be worse. You could be the last one I had in here. Enough about that, let's move on. Not a bad find there, Deputy! I'm tempted to let him freeze up on the glacier, but then we'd have to thaw Innocent back out later when his mother bailed him out. Guilty as charged then!"

He continues, "Due to the fact you had a previous fine already that is unpaid, we'll just tack this fine onto it, along with a ten percent penalty. Your previous fines totaled out at 5206155 silvers. We're going to apply that as a debt that you can pay off anytime, and we're going to stick you in prison for a while. That should show you that crime doesn't pay!"

He adds, "Now, you were also charged 1000 silvers for healing prior to being put in jail, so you might as well tack that fee on too."

A number of burly guards come in, set you in some manacles, and drag you away. You are taken to a small wagon and set in the back under guard. After a short ride, the wagon stops and you are escorted into the local prison. Soon, you find yourself locked in a cell to serve your sentence.

I paid off my 5mil+ debt in Icemule several days ago, then I killed someone tonight in town, got a 15k fine, but the judge tacked on the 5mil+ fine I already paid to my new debt and threw me in jail for 2 hrs.

Now, while you may think this is true justice (heh) I feel otherwise! I paid the debt.

No staff members on duty. :(

Suddenly, a clerk enters the area and motions to you. "I've come to tell you you've been granted a universal pardon, for some reason beyond my understanding. The Halfling deputy says to tell you that you'll be watched," he says. The official then quickly trots away.

Suddenly, you hear the rattle of keys and the cell door swings open. A number of burly guards come in, set you in some manacles, and drag you away, locking the cell door tightly behind them.

You are taken to the entry area of the prison and set free. The head guard that escorted you says, "Well, you've served your sentence. Keep out of trouble, otherwise you might end up right back here." With that, he turns on his heel and leaves.

Its a known bug, and has been around for years, I have been told they are trying to fix it but its hard to track. The best I can tell you is, if you owe money in town for say the empath, locker usage, or any other things on rare occasions they justice system takes that debt to be from a prior crime not paid. And ya just about any gm can fix it so you dont lose your things if you assist right away.

Maybe you shouldn't kill people in every town you go to?

I had paid the debt off completely three or so days before the new fine. So I owed nothing. Then the old, paid debt reappeared when I got arrested, tacked on to this new charge.
