Seriously, who writes this stuff?!? 06/19/2018 06:49 AM CDT
So I want to try the Ophidian Cabal thing to get the lootsack.

Dude explicitly says that I should search around to find the exit from the wine rack room.
No problem: I Am Bard, See Me Speed.
Tonis, search. And search. And search. And search. (At one second apiece, this isn't as bad as it sounds.)
For the entire duration of Tonis, something like a minute and a half.
(Note that we are only given five minutes.)

Somewhere along the line, game-text says, "You should observe your surroundings." or whatever it says.

JUST HOW THE )&*&^%&^$% HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT I SHOULD 'OBSERVE' WHEN THAT JACKASS TOLD ME TO SEARCH?!?!?!?

And, somewhat more fiscally related: You couldn't tell me that IN SOMEWHAT LESS THAN THIRTY PERCENT of my allowed time?!

.

He couldn't be trained to say that, "You should take care to observe your surroundings carefully in order to whatever whatever,"?!?!

.

.

.

All of that, of course, only gets to take place AFTER somebody with Lich used the 'go' to get us there (and then backtraced it line by line to see how to actually DO it).

So, when exactly did we start "going" NPCs?!? This is new to me. I'm used to "going" doors, and stair[s | ways | cases] of all kinds, port[als | cullises], windows, even trails and entr[ances | yways] and alleys and ladders.

Maybe have something in the 'ask jackass about voucher' (where they look at you crosseyed and haven't got a clue what you're talking about), or 'ask nimrod about heist', or SOMEwhere, that they're willing to tell you how to spend your voucher that you've paid Real Live Shekels for?

.

'Analyze' has come a LONG DAMN WAY in making items more useful. (i.e. Reducing the 'guess the verb' lottery when playing with them.)
Merchant signs are typically quite informative nowadays.
How about spreading some of that love around here, too?

I've often wondered what happened to expressing oneself in a calm manner. Reading this - even though I wasn't the one who wrote it - just makes me want to scream back at you. After all, you're pretty much screaming at us.

If you have a problem with something, please feel free to express your concern and/or suggestions for how something could be more clear to you. Often times we're coming at it from a very different angle. Our goal is not to confuse you or make you -- or anyone -- frustrated.

I certainly wasn't trying to convey Tone:pedantic or Tone:monotonous, no.

I believe I managed to avoid specifically naming anyone as an idiot, though I did refer to the NPCs slanderously.

.

Honestly, my in-person reaction was more like Obelix, poking TocTocTocTocToc against the side of his head with a forefinger, flailing, "These GMs are crazy!"

.

When I "ask bandit about bank", I get told there's good stuff in there.

When I "ask bandit about heist" he looks at me crosseyed. Since the event is named, "Bank Heist," maybe that could be one his clue words?

When I "ask bandit about voucher," I get looked at crosseyed. Since the vouchers were generated specifically for this event--titled, I note, "Bank Heist"--maybe he might know something about them?

He is similarly ignorant about "ophidian" and "cabal".

As conspirators go, he's fantastic: he don't say nothin' to nobody about nuttin'.
As a helpful prop in a text-based game, he stinks like a month-dead baboon.

.

.

And as far as the 'go <NPC>' update... yeah, I got nothing.

you do realize I hope, Robert, that this facet of your feedback has absolutely nothing to do with any GM, etc., etc., and can literally be recreated (and often is) for any NPC in game via Lich, aliases and go2?

I find your observations interesting, even humorous as an outsider - if a bit stronger than I've seen from you in a good while. But that one? That one's just terribly miscast. Blame the lich community.

A rugged Silent Investor marauder points at you and announces, "You there, we could use someone like you to help us in the bank. Just have a stamped voucher in hand and come with me."
A cloaked Ophidian Cabal bandit whispers, "Psssst...you, over there. I can lead you to the bank through a secret doorway if you want to rob the place. Just have a stamped voucher in hand and come with me."
A shrouded Poisoned Heretic assassin offers, "I have a rather rather callous task for you. If wish to serve the shadows, I can lead you through a secret tunnel if you're good with death. Just have a stamped voucher in hand and come with me."

Every word of that was in English, but I have no idea what it means.

I understand that "go2" can be used with an NPC target, and that makes sense to me. You are going "to" something.
If that was all you're driving at, then I'm back with you.

.

Seriously. I have never had occasion to use the verb 'go'--with an NPC target--in this game. Ever.
Routes, bridges, buildings, fortresses, paths, portals, doorways, houses, shops, stables, ramps, arenas, temples, arches... inanimate things that one would think to "go <into, onto, up, down, whatever>" as a mode of movement. Yes.
People?
Never once. (Before now.)

Um, one of you is talking about a verb in the game (Krakii) and the other is talking about a Lich script named "go2" (Doug).

I'm not sure if Krakii's being humorous or well and truly knows way less then even I do about Lich (possible, but not by much), but hopefully this clears everything up.

Krakii,
I agree with your point that the system was overly vague and the choice of wording to induce OBSERVE,LISTEN,TRACK and STEAL could have been better. Your tone, though neither pedantic or monotone, come across as just rude and unnecessary. Ive always admired the breadth of your knowledge and the manner in which you convey it. The spirit of this comment seems out of place for you.

LIPPINCOTTC1,
Your tongue seems to only have a rough side these days. Complaint without any sort of plausible solution is just whining for the sake of whining. Most of us have spent money on DR on top of our normal subscriptions and hate to see it wasted. Consensus is that the pendant are retired for the time being, but not forever. Stow them in a locker for when they return or don't. Your extra spending on DR is for its entertainment value not its fiscal return. Not every dollar spent above your subscription is going to have a dollar to donut exchange rate you like. Writing a flaming response isn't going to get you anywhere because its burnt up before getting anywhere useful.

You have valid points in your arguments though;

Yes, the new event model has an aire of Play-to-Win. Guess why? It works! People are happy to throw money at it but , unlike many games, play to win doesn't really matter here because players don't fight other players. You might not be able to afford the biggest stick in the game get over it.

Yes, they could have pulled all the pendant bits from the arena. No, they didn't because, a) the time was spent better elsewhere. b) it was intentional, and we dont see it yet. Either answer is the correct one.

I dont want to sound like a sack of salt water, but the attitude of players recently has gotten very sour. We have more opportunities for everything now. GALDs galore, Merchants and events near monthly, GMs who actually interact with us. In my 20 years at this game Ive never had more fun. If I'm lazy and would rather blow some cash on something I can, and If I don't then I can still grind it out the old way. We have been gifted a horse, lets assume its teeth are fine for now.

I actually get Krakii's frustration with all of this and experienced it myself the first few runs.

GO NPC:

This is really counter intuitive in that you are typing GO (not ;go2) NPCNAME instead of GO PORTALNAME in order to move from the heist entry room to the actual quest starting room. To start the quest, the NPC noun is actually the portal for all intents and purposes, such as GO ASSASSIN. (By comparison, to enter the sewers, it's GO GRATE with voucher in hand, not GO SWEEPER, for the old tunnel sweeper NPC standing in front of said grate.) I was trying all sorts of things at first to figure out exactly what I had to type GO with in order to begin the quest, after having relied exclusively on Stormfront's point and click the first couple of passes. Unfortunately, SF point and click was the only way I was able to intuitively begin a heist run. If links are disabled, or another client is used instead, it'd be really great if there were something, even in parentheses, noting that I should type GO NPC to begin the quest.

Immersion vs guess-the-verb for heist progression:

On my first run with the Poisoned Heretics, I was told that I would need to search around to find a way into the bank. So, of course, I used SEARCH repeatedly and got nowhere. This surprised me because I am near cap and doubled in perception, and I had previously read on the forums that skills and stats do factor into the heist runs. About a minute or two of zero success - and also of me trying to interact with every named noun in the first room's description in case this was more like the Rings of Lumnis event (and coming up with nothing that I could interact with), I got what I am guessing is an automated message saying I should try watching my surroundings. That did the trick to help clue me in on the correct verb, even with WATCH not being in call caps. I wish I'd known that this was the crucial verb needed to trigger the next step instead of the one I was explicitly told upon entering (search). Similarly, once I killed the first mob, I spent most of the rest of my time that run playing guess-the-verb once again until prompted that I should try sneaking to go further in.

All subsequent runs were very straight forward for me, having finally figured out the right verb earlier, but that first run definitely left a sour taste in my mouth as being a frustrating game of guess-the-verb while being told a completely different verb to use... all with a timed scenario that I had paid real money for (instead of just silvers). I can certainly chalk up not getting my money's worth on a single run due to my inattentiveness if I didn't read directions carefully, but I honestly felt like I had - and lost out on a Simucoin-based purchase as a result. It was just one run, and thus a fairly inexpensive monetary commitment. It was still a monetary commitment, and for that I expected a bit more.

I deigned and coded the Bank Heist.

The NPC that escorts you in gives you a minor clue. After a minute, you get another clue. And at minute two, you get the exact thing to do. I worried that it would be too long, so there is also a HELP menu, but it does cost you time.

The Bank Heist is a very minor puzzle theme with combat, so it's intended not to hold your hand through the whole thing.

As for GO NPC, you're going with them. There isn't a doorway. We've used this in a few places.

these two statements don't match. what do you think people are going to do when they are told to search around?

>a frustrating game of guess-the-verb while being told a completely different verb to use...

this is what people are experiencing. EK is incredibly smart and good at GS. it's good feedback.

>>these two statements don't match. what do you think people are going to do when they are told to search around?

The NPC isn't giving the exact verb to use. They each say search around for clues. If the objective was to BREAK WALL, and it was a puzzle to figure that out, I wouldn't have the NPC say BREAK WALL to get to the next stage.

There is a reason there are built in clues and a help system to get a clue at the cost of some time (20 seconds).

I've gone ahead and removed the word search from the NPC's entry dialogue. Since they are being taken as very literal verbs to use. There are other clues they mention that aren't verbs you'd use, like take, defend, patrol, etc. Hopefully that helps remove some confusion.

It's the same problem as always, Wyrom: it's a text game, and no tonality or facial expression to modify delivery.

If the two of us were standing together, and one said to the other that we needed to "search" around, with air-quotes and wink-wink-nudge-nudge, odds are good that the recipient would not, necessarily, rely solely upon the actual verb, 'search', but my try other synonyms.
But straight dialog like that was, with an extant verb that has been a basic standby for twenty-plus years? Yeah, a big 'No.'

.

Having now learned this, I will proceed to play the Heist portion of the Heist with my Thief, who is actually capable of hiding, and see if I can't manage to put together a bag of holding all the stuffs.

I am aware of its existence, as well some of the specific usages people make--I had heard of 'go2' before this, for example--and even took the time to read through its documentation a while ago. (In KrakiiTimeā„¢, "a while" is about four times as long as "recently", which is itself in the "six months to three years" range or so.) I would suspect it of being a decade or more ago, given how long I've seen posts about LichNet.

While I liked some of the features, I read the part about "input username and password" and pitched everything after reading it.

For the record, in addition to people designing systems with descriptions that explicitly contain verbs of long standing but that do not trigger with said verb...

...I also virulently disagree with people who design items with exactly the same adjective + noun as items of long standing.
- From Spellbound, "a sigil-incised golden wand", multi-spell caster. i.e. "my gold wand" Who seriously thinks someone is going to type out "golden" in order to make certain to get this one, rather than wind up with the one that chucks bolts of fire?
It couldn't be "a golden sigil-incised wand", so that we could "get sig wand"?

- From <whatever spot Kerl got it>, "an entwined white and green crystal wand", multi-spell caster. i.e. "my crystal wand"
Same question: it couldn't be "get my ent wand"--with the item designed as "a crystal entwined white and green wand", to avoid spraying ourselves with acid?

.

I have literally known about the gold wands here since before I started playing: I was looking over the shoulder of one of my MPBT buddies when he was on page 930 of Genie playing this RPG that, hey, that looks like RoleMaster rules! (And one of the things he found on a goblin was a gold wand, which--he being a Mage--he promptly used to smoke the next several beasties.)

Why are items designed in this way? People don't think about things?

Yes, I realize that it is entirely possible for there to be confusion arising from "get third vultite greatshield from stand" in your locker, as people find different things of different properties and want to keep them. But you sing to those and get them worked on by Enchanters and merchants and whatnot, and they all look pretty different.

But the "common trinkets"--YES, I'm looking at things that are triggered by "a gold ring", too...--should not have their toes trod upon.
When you 'get gold wand', you have certain expectations.

Maybe join might be a better verb for it. It certainly seems like a better fit to me.

I like Dougs "GO WITH <NPC NAME>"

But I would also suggest "FOLLOW <NPC NAME>" or "STALK/SNEAK <NPC NAME>" (if you are hiding).

Although using something like GO WITH or FOLLOW could automatically have you STALK/SNEAK if you are already hiding as well.

On the other side of the coin...
How many VERBs do there really need to be?
In the end, we (the players) only really need one verb for any single action.
From there we can alias it all we want using external (non Simutronics) software and scripting.
