My Elder Mage 06/11/2018 10:29 PM CDT
Greetings folks.

My main has reached the point of learning quaternary skills.

I would appreciate you number crunchers, mnemonic wiki readers, and anyone with just an opinion to make suggestions.

The mage is done with weapon skills for now, the THW and Ranged should hold him. The four armor ranks is all he will ever need.

Questions:

1.) Is there value in any mental mana control or more spirit mana control, or any of their lores?
(the 40 ranks SMC is for activation of my 220 item).

I know that Blessings lore will help Self Control and sometimes I use the spell, but that seems a stretch.

2.) If I eliminate Pickpocket, picking and disarming, and probably also Ambush and Stalking, the remaining skills should be in what sequence?
After finishing Trading I will probably get the rest of MOC for FoF. After that I am ambivalent but there is not much left to choose from,
i.e. Dodging 20/20, heh.

An interesting conundrum! If I might ask - why would you forego disarm / lock pick. Or for that matter, ambush? Especially with ranged - short 15 AS there ( https://gswiki.play.net/Attack_strength#Ranged_Weapons )

Thanks Doug, I put ambush back on the to-do list.

As for disarm/pick, I thought that only having 1x would not let me pick like level since rogues can 3x the skill.

it's hard to fault that logic - I suspect you're exactly accurate. But - not everything like level drops maximum range boxes. I'm sure you've noticed some are much easier to pop than others.

I use a philosophy here, rather than logic. If I've nothing really to spend the training points on, I'll pick up disarm (first - way first!), and then pick lock. Probably most of them I won't be able to get - but some of them I will!

Appreciated and good point.

That still leaves the question of spiritual and mental - anything there?

Not really anything from me, no. These fit the specialty bucket (like your 220 item drives SMC).

Not a suggestion on what to train next but just a suggestion that you might consider swapping your spells around a bit to the following:

>> Spell Lists
>> Major Elemental....................| 113

>> Spell Lists
>> Minor Elemental....................| 77

>> Spell Lists
>>Wizard.............................| 113

With this change you might find that Call Wind is very effective and Earthen Fury is quite a lot of fun as well. My experience with Call Wind at 101 ranks vs. Call Wind at 113 ranks was that it went from 'not reliable enough' to 'a good go to disabler' depending on what and where you hunt.

Roger that, and I certainly do not need the extra runestaff DS either.

I have not hunted anything I felt needed to be disabled prior to attacking it, 908 or 910 are usually my first shot.

>and Earthen Fury is quite a lot of fun

Roger that, the new boil earth is radically improved. I have that one on a hot key for Seers so I do not waste a bolt and find they have WoF up.

Yeah, you just watch. Naos, Estild, Haliste, Kaikala, Valyrka, Viduus and Wyrom are all going to band together on this post-cap ascension thingie and require 1x non-core Mana Controls to take the next step. Just my luck.

What could possibly go wrong (tm)?

Chiming in a bit late to the discussion, but ... as someone who has both a capped rogue and a capped mage, I will advise drop the disarm/picking totally. Either go a full 2x or don't bother. Also, drop pickpocketing. Hardly anyone bothers to pick people's pockets any more. If you still want to protect yourself, have a Lockmaster stick a couple of open jaw traps in your backpack.
