Polearms Paladin 02/08/2012 03:55 PM CST

I havent rolled a new character in ages.... a bit fuzzy on all the particulars. I have a variety of pure-casting characters, so a Paladin for me is rather like treading untraveled roads.... I may get lost.

Teetering between human and elf, and am interested in pole-arms.

Any ideas or advise, stat placement suggestions, or training plan hints for a virgin would-be paladin?

Much appreciated. :)

Well, a paladin is pretty much a warrior with spells; because of the spells, they get fewer CMan skills available. Also they don't have a guild with skills like warriors do. I figured I would just pump up the prime stats and fudge the rest. I didn't bother to go for any stat crunchers; you may want to be more obsessive about stats than I am. This character is a half Krolvin; I tanked influence because I figured everyone would hate her anyway :)

Thanks for the stats and plan.

Here's what I have come up for for a human paladin....

Stats:

Constitution (CON): 60
Dexterity (DEX): 72
Discipline (DIS): 59
Logic (LOG): 80
Intuition (INT): 70
Strength (STR): 60
Agility (AGI): 80
Influence (INF): 35
Wisdom (WIS): 62
Aura (AUR): 82

Aimed for growth.... most stats either at 100, a few into 90's at cap. The exception being Influence. 79 at cap. Everyone's Paladin stats I cam across had a low Influence. Hope I'm on the right track here.

Training Plan:

I THINK I'll have enough training points to keep up this plan....

Armor Use - 2x
C.M - 1x
Polearms - 2x
M.O.C. - 1x
Physical Fit. - 1.5x
Dodging - 1x
Harness Power - 1x
Spiritual Mana Control - 1x
Spiritual Lore - 1x
(undecided focus)

Minor Spiritual - .333
Paladin - 1x

*Climbing & Swimming (15-20 ranks over time)

Feasible? Crap? Let me know!

Thanks

Not nearly feasible. Its not even feasible if you drop the spells back to 1x total, though its getting towards the ballpark.

I'd stop MOC at 5 ranks and then only add to it when not short of physical points, cut spells to 1x total, and only get SMC and lore as mental points allowed, which would be not very much.

Note that when Paladins were released, as the most physical of the Semis, the GMs envisioned them only .75x trained in Spell Research...

Probably you are not allowing that you get the points for 2 more than your actual levels. 6 ranks at level 1 is 2x not 6x. You can get a very misleading picture of what is possible if you train a level 1 character thinking 2 ranks is 2x training.

Having 4 spells at level 3 is quite possible but thats 4 of your 5 possible 1x spells and 0.8x, not 1.33x. You can have 102 and Paladin at level and its still 1x. If you want 103 and paladin at level then you have to pay the 2x cost for that spell and it gets even more painful.

All too true; I am managing to get 1x in spells, but at the cost of learning almost no ancillary skills. TPs are very scarce when you try to do that.

Excellent feedback. Thanks!

Here's the modification based on what I've read:

Armor Use - 2x
C.M - 1x
Polearms - 2x
M.O.C. - (5 ranks, then occasional as extra allows)
Physical Fit. - 1.5x
Dodging - 1x
Harness Power - 1x
Spiritual Mana Control - 1x
Spiritual Lore - (as extra allows)
(undecided focus)

Minor Spiritual - .2
Paladin - .8x

*Climbing & Swimming (15-20 ranks over time)

If need be, I'll limit spells even more. How's the training plan looking now? Hopefully more feasible! ;) Thanks!

What the GMs thought in 2004 doesn't necessarily hold true in 2012. You can do all sorts of

You CAN single spells. I wouldn't.

I would not single in SMC, as mentioned, and ignore lores until cap. You want CMANs and you definitely want to MOC. Single PF for the time being, and maybe adjust with a fix skill around 60-70th.

I believe MOC to be the single most useful skill you can get that isn't a spell. Hit 'em with 1614, then mstrike the crowd.

My paladin uses a sword and shield but I agree that MOC is incredibly useful and fun. I use 1614-->MSTRIKE and 1630-->MSTRIKE interchangably for crowd control. I also get a lot of usage out of 5 ranks in shield bash so if you weren't using a polearm I would recommend going for this CMAN option as well. Maybe someone else can chime in with CMAN suggestions for polearm users.

I think for the most part your plan looks just fine. There are some places I'd go differently but you certainly will advance fine as described there.

I never go in for the mana controls. I rarely used them to raise and never did any mana sharing to speak of. Those points were always more valuable in other skills.

For spells I would be more specific with your spell goals. There are particular thresholds to aim for. Spending 20 levels knowing 104-106 and not having 107 is silly. I like going for 103, then sticking with paladin until 35, then back to minor spirit for 104-120.

Once you find more points, moving CM up to 1.5x will make your Cman charge much more combat effective, but that is a longer term issue. Lores are the same. I did 25 religion, 24 summoning, and the rest blessing in the early going (I think everyone can agree that the religion first is the way to go) and then moved to a total 25 religion, 100 summoning, 77 blessing in the end.

Thanks once again for all the useful feedback. I think I have narrowed down my plan pretty precisely now.

I know I can't do this forever..... but I'll post my updated Plan here one last time (just in case I am drastically wrong in any particular points!).

After that.... it's rolling time and Elanthia will have one more Paladin walking its enchanted lands. :)

Training Plan:
Armor Use - 2x
C.M - 1x
Polearms - 2x
M.O.C. – 1x
Physical Fit. - 1.25x
Dodging - 1x
Harness Power - 1x
Spiritual Mana Control - .25x
Spiritual Lore - (*when extra)
1) 25 Ranks in Religion
2) 24 Ranks in Summoning
3) 77 Blessing

Spell Goals: - .8x
1) Minor Spiritual, 101–103
2) Paladin, 1601-1635
3) Minor Spiritual, 104-120

*Climbing & Swimming (15-20 ranks over time)
*Change C.M. to 1.5x when older
