Specialist or generalist? 01/02/2014 03:58 PM CST
I started as a generalist, intending to train in as many attacking skills as possible. I ended up as a specialist in THW and brawl, with all other training designed to enhance those skills.

How about you guys?

When I very first started I was twc/edged then added in brawling for voln fu at around 20. After a while I felt I was spending too much tps on all those weapon skills so at 50 when a chance to change my skills presented itself I switched to thw/brawl, with two-handed weapons being my primary focus and brawling obviously as a secondary attack. Even with a good bit of post cap experience it is still going to be quite some time before I add in any other weapon skills.

I started my dwarf warrior as a battle axe wielding THW-wielder ("Shields are fer girly elves 'n children"). Still am trained that way and excited about the introduction of executioners stance to make it even more exciting! Other training is focused on maximizing effectiveness with the THW style and survival. Additional weapon style training is a definite post-cap goal for me.

I started 2x THW with a claidhmore and 2x/2x OHE/shield as backup, and had a blast stance dancing all around the Landing with the claidh until switching to a shimmering vultite longsword around when the glacier and gash were swarming with frost giants, ice trolls, witchs etc. Needed my shield then, good times.

I also was 2x brawl I think pretty much from the start though I rarely stepped Voln for awhile and preferred live creatures. I just thought he should be able to handle himself in a bar fight.

Now I'm 2x in every weapon but polearms and ranged. Well, THW isn't quite there but at 1.75x and rising.

I'm kinda the opposite. I started with only focusing on THW, Katanas. Then realized that I wanted to join Voln over GoS and switched to a blessable No-dachi instead. Then as time went on and I gained TPs UAC and the shield changes were introduced so I played with several builds/weapons and ended up enjoying a UAC/blunt/shield build. I never EVER thought I would enjoy a shield build but man was I wrong. Also, I know UAC has its issues but it actually works well in conjunction with cman qstrike for a 1 second smite on non-corps.

I tend to focus on complimentary skills: OHE/Hurling/TWC for example, allow for some excellent situationally effective methods of combat:

1. Remove shield and hurl one weapon.
2. Remove shield and swing one weapon.
3. Stow shield and hurl two weapons.
4. Remove shield and mstrike with one weapon.
5. Stow shield and mstrike with two weapons.
6. Various set-ups to go with the above.

Granted, this is difficult until post cap, but 2 or three of the above is not difficult.

A combination of hurling and ohe is very possible from the get go, as is ohe/shield with an option to twc/moc. Etc.

Generally speaking, the point is to give yourself a couple of good options. Combine that with our biggest strength: we survive better than anyone else, and you're good to go.

If you train in polearm, you can skip twc and ohe. Just grip it and rip it. I plan on adding hurl to my build eventually so I can chunk spears.

The complimentary physical combat skills of hurling and twc are two skills that can turn a flat, one dimensional combat style into one with a ton of options. We've also gained a huge range of abilities with the cmans, shield maneuvers and armor skills, but adding one or both of those layered combat skills can really open up a lot of options for almost every situation you find yourself in.
