Talking dead arbalesters 03/20/2016 01:07 PM CDT
Figured someone might get a kick out of this. Besides the utterly cheap death, Divine Vengeance has killed the arbalester before it manages to mock me for my death...but it cannot be stopped!

>get star diam
You pick up an uncut star-of-Tamzyrr diamond.

A rotting Citadel arbalester pulls a linen-wrapped bolt and a piece of flint from her quiver. She strikes the flint against the bolt's metal tip and the linen is immediately set ablaze!
A rotting Citadel arbalester cocks her arbalest and loads it with a wooden burning bolt.
Your imflass plate hums with spiritual force, filling you with a sense of divine vigilance and a preternatural awareness of a rotting Citadel arbalester. Anticipating its next move, you steel yourself against the oncoming assault!
A rotting Citadel arbalester fires a wooden burning bolt at you!
AS: +309 vs DS: +277 with AvD: +22 + d100 roll: +48 = +102
... and hits for 1 point of damage!
Tap to the arm pricks some interest but not much else.
* * As a rotting Citadel arbalester's burning bolt hits you, it emits a burst of flame! * *
... 70 points of damage!
Fire completely surrounds you. Your blood boils and your heart stops.
A barely perceptible pulse radiates from your imflass plate, harnessing your connection to the Paladin to alert your brothers and sisters of the Order of your need.
You feel less resolved as the divine urging subsides, fading into obscurity.
You lose a bit of focus as the knowledge of future battles drifts from your mind.
You feel slightly weakened as the blood in your veins thins.
You lose your extra internal fortitude.
You return to normal color.
The layer of protection fades away.
The deep blue glow leaves you.
You notice your blood flow go back to normal.
You no longer feel so dextrous.
The air about you stops shimmering.
You feel your extra strength departing.
You become solid again.
Your boosted confidence and fearlessness fade.
The powerful look leaves you.
The subdued warmth embracing you fades along with the spiritual force surrounding your arms.
Your bolstered defenses fade with the soft glow about you.
The dully illuminated mantle protecting you begins to falter, then completely fades away.
You feel your abilities diminish as the energy provided by your patron fades from around you.
The dim celadon wisps about your hands flare up once more and fade completely away.
The light blue glow leaves you.
You feel the extra courage wane.
The rush of collective knowledge of the undead fades from your mind.
It seems you have died, my friend. Although you cannot do anything, you are keenly aware of what is going on around you...
You mentally give a sigh of relief as you remember that the Goddess Lorminstra owes you a favor.
...departing in 16 mins...
You sense the powers guarding your corpse awakening.
A lambent white-gold cloud rolls through the area.
A putrefied Citadel herald is buffeted by the white-gold cloud and is knocked to the ground.
... 35 points of damage!
Awesome lash of plasma severs the Citadel herald's arm completely!
The Citadel herald is stunned!
A rotting Citadel arbalester is buffeted by the white-gold cloud and is knocked to the ground.
... 35 points of damage!
Terrifying surge of plasma reduces the Citadel arbalester's head to burnt meat.
A rotting Citadel arbalester collapses motionless to the ground.
You sense that 17 creatures have been injured and 1 have been slain in the reckoning!
The burning bolt burns away into nothingness.
A rotting Citadel arbalester glances over your body and utters, "This citadel shall not fall."
You are a ghost! You must wait until someone resurrects you, or you decay. Either way, it won't be long now! (HELP for more details).
* Flail has gone to feed the fishes!

There's also the minor irony that the gem-cut chrism in my holder was the one delaying me looting the room after I'd previously cleared it out.

Geez. Were you over-hunting? That flare seems ridiculously powerful.

Halflings are just really flammable.

If I assumed it was its nominal level (56) then no. My paladin is just shy of level 60.

Both this one and the plasma one from the red hammers can be pretty nasty. I'll see about parsing my log files later, but this flare is pretty high up there for Citadel deaths of my paladin. However, I can say in just an ad hoc manner that it's not always so nasty. All in all the main thing is that arbalesters are really fast, and a 2HW character doesn't have a good ranged defense. This means statistical anomalies can become an issue. Using 1602 when I first see an arbalester is one of my standard tactics.

Derp. Nominal level (58). In any case, still the answer is like-level hunting.

< All in all the main thing is that arbalesters are really fast,>

and they sweep.... definitely a critter to disable on sight. I miss hunting in RR, it kept me on my toes. Minotaurs are just plain boring after the citadel.

A severed gnomish hand crawls in on its fingertips and makes a rude gesture before quickly decaying and rotting into dust. A gust of wind quickly scatters the dust.

Status might not be perfect, but the numbers are stun rounds.

Average rank is 3.3, though I'm not sure that's a useful metric for these data. Has anyone cared to try to get large stat sizes on these kinds of things to determine the typical distribution.
