Rangers and polearms 03/18/2008 10:21 PM CDT
I'm thinking about changing my ranger's build, into a polearm build. Anyone have good pointers for this? I'm not sure about the damage weighting for each class of polearms, but I was thinking about using a pike or spear for weapon. Let me know what you think.

There's a HUGE difference in the amount of damage that a pike (lance) is going to do compared to a spear. Most people that use spears tend to use them with a shield and ambush for a vital area, like the eye. A lance is generally going to be swung from the open and must be held with both hands. The lance has the highest DF's of any weapon on almost every armor type.

I'm sure Belnia will come around shortly to answer in-depth more because she actually is a ranger that uses pole-arms.

Pretty much any Polearm that needs to be held with both hands is going to do some good damage. You may want to pay attention more to the base speed of the weapon that you want to swing. If you have a race with a lower DEX and AGI bonus, then going with a faster polearm will probably be more important, to keep your RT lower.

Tridents are pretty good middle of the road. Here is a DF chart for your reference.

Pole*-*arm Skin Soft Scale Chain Plate
Halberd .550 .400 .400 .300 .200
Spear (1-handed) .425 .325 .250 .250 .160
Spear (2-handed) .550 .385 .340 .325 .220
Lance .725 .525 .550 .475 .350
Javelin .425 .325 .250 .250 .160
Awl-pike .600 .550 .575 .450 .350
Jeddart-axe .550 .425 .425 .325 .250
Pilum .350 .250 .225 .175 .060
Hammer of Kai .550 .425 .450 .350 .250
Trident (1-handed) .425 .350 .260 .230 .150
Trident (2-handed) .600 .425 .375 .300 .185

I would suggest a superior forged awl-pike. Awl-pikes are superior to lances against leather and scale, and equal against plate. Lances are better against chain or skin.

Anything in skin is doomed against polearms, so it hardly matters. The awl-pike will be your big hitter.

I would also suggest grabbing a naginata or jeddart-axe as a back up weapon. Jeddarts are nice, because they don't puncture. Naginatas are nice due to the AvD boost. You will be swinging from the open, and polearms are insanely expensive for rangers (21/6 a level to 2x them, YOUCH!) I'm not sure how viable it is at low levels, but you'll REALLY want Wall of Thorns for that passive 20% blocking.
