for one handed polearms like spears, are shields needed? Or are your defenses the same as the two handed one?

It's just like all one handers if you GRIP it with one hand, thus allowing you to use a shield.

yes, but as a polearm, do you need the shield for defense?

i would assume so, but i really dont want to learn shield use.

Yes, you need a shield. Polearm DS does not stay the same between one-handed and two-handed, much the same way you lose DS if you switch a bastard sword or katana from two hands to one.
