bandits... 09/25/2014 04:24 PM CDT
I'm getting annoyed as this is the killer of me with bandits all the time and thus pondering.. what do you'll have and use gear wise to prevent this or if I am overlooking something?

The problem I'm facing is the begging part of the log.. which is a level 3 injury and thus I can't cast and it's just gets uglier from there. Any tips as this is usually what kills my paladin these days?
Afore the log.. gear is as follows:

My infamous veil iron katana (5x)
a blue vaalorn greathelm
6x vaalorn full plate, heavy crit padded

I always 2x in Armor, PT, and my Weapon
1x in CMs
Spells.. stopped for now though I'm considering getting another 10 slots just to have 1650 already though not implemented

Rest are just fillers.. but Lore: 15 in Spirit Lore, 40 in Religion Lore

It's the damage to the head that's giving me the trouble and I don't have any answer to it other than pray I get lucky and can get the first cast since I typically find it best to use 1630 followed by 1614 then CMAN Surge, 1630 again and follow it up a Multi Strike and then kill what's left starting with the one not stunned (if any). Basically I'm crowd controlling and this (and Cut throat) are the number one killers

Any suggestions to prevent the right off the bat a level 3 injury to the eye that prevents casting? I thought I was covered with the full plate (HCP) and the greathelm (normal)

What's your survival and perception?

Consider if you'd avoided that bladder how different the outcome. It's not an absolute answer, but chipping away a bit at a time is what I did, and this isn't a bad place to start (prone disorienting traps bandits lay).

It isn't completely preventable but there are some precautions I can think of--

- 207 (Purify Air) protects against the initial gas pouch.
- Training for 140 (Wall of Force) would give a better DS buffer.
- Symbol of Transcendence protects you from taking physical wounds while it is in effect.
- Voln symbols in general are usable even while wounded so you could have tried Symbol of Sleep as a disabler (or just Return and come back for them after healing up).

Not a paladin (more's the pity!), but I would definitely pick up some more survival and perception ranks. We just had a similar conversation over in the Ranger folder, and that was the same conclusion.

And you might just chalk it up to bad luck. Your gear looks good. I singled in perception but that would not have stopped a giantman rogue ambushing from hiding with a twohanded weapon. Even if you had 40 more DS from 140 the endroll still would have been 181.

Stance off then mstriking might not have been the best thing in that situation. Stepping away to heal up with herbs then going back might have been another move to try.

Bad luck will get you occasionally.

Probably not an answer you are looking for but, while it has been awhile since I have hunted them, my paladin pretty much wades though bandits. The major difference being that he is sword and board vs. two-hander. Shields provide a lot of defense in terms of DS and the ability to block some of the attacks. So I still get disabled but can pretty safely wait through the stun/RT/stancing/whatever and come out on the other side swinging.

At least one if not more of the attacks would likely have been shield blocked and two or three attacks would have been avoided by the additional shield DS (saving you 6-7 health plus reduced damage on the other attacks due to lower end attack results). Additionally with spike mastery some damage and potential stun/death could have been dealt back while you were incapacitated as well.

My perception and survival training are both pretty low (23 perception, 20 survival, 1xPF at 72nd level).

If you aren't already using it, maybe throwing up 102 for the additional defense when hunting bandits would help as well. It looks like you can spare the hit to your AS.

Chad probably had the best advice: step away to regroup/eat herbs/recover and finish them off a few minutes down the road.

Arguably I could have fled, though I might have generated more bandits on the Trace Trail. However; to be fair, I haven't' remastered Voln yet so I can just sym of return (I resigned then tried GoS for a while then decided Voln is better all around for both RP and mechanically so it's win/win).

A question: I thought survival just aids in creating fires? It just frustrating when the first attack takes away casting is all but I'm guessing it's based off the roll result more than the actual damage thus my awesome redux was neglected when it came to the severity level of the hit though it was just 17 damage.

I do appreciate all the advise so thank you everybody :-) Just trying to figure out if there's something else I could do when I can't run and return (and truthfully the bandits still follow you even if you go to another room or two though you can heal down).

For me lying down and mstriking.. I chose that because I didn't want the RT from standing up, and not knowing if they would have done another CM to put me back on the ground or add more RT. Usually I stand up when I feel safe enough to endure the RT (Usually 6 seconds though I'm not encumbered).
