Don't know where to put this, so I guess here...

I've had this idea for a long time. Basically, allow trial accounts that are free and last forever. On this trial account, you can get up to level 20. However, you are confined to ONE town and can never leave unless you upgrade to a basic account. You could even limit the races and professions.

I know this would draw people to the game. At first glance, paying (whatever it costs for a basic sub) doesn't seen appealing for a text based game. Once you get into it a bit though, it becomes something you see as worth it.

Just an idea I've had though.

And an idea I liked.

Been mentioned before too. I like the idea, as long as the trial character is also strictly limited to self-cast only (no pocket wizards for everyone), and limited healing (maybe just minor wounds), and raising (maybe let them only raise level 10 and under characters).

On the other hand, a bigger problem is probably accountability. It's easy to be highly bothersome or mechanic-abusing when you can just open a new trial account anytime. If you have to link it to a credit card to be valid, it'll probably defeat the purpose, since people typically aren't willing to enter a card unless they're also willing to pay. You could link it to a phone number, but I know I'd be very hesitant to give mine out (but maybe that's a lower barrier than a CC).

One thing I really enjoyed about a particular graphical game I've played is a "green" area that isn't part of the normal game, but allows a new, low level character to wander around and grasp the concept of the game before jumping in with the long-time players.

I suppose an area that only characters 1-20(and mentors obviously) could enter would help get rid of the free spell up character issue.

I'd rather GM resources were put toward things for the existing player base.

Yes, that would be nice, but I think a larger player base also helps the existing player base. There is always plenty of people talking about ways for drawing more people to GS, so this seems to be a concern of the current player base.

Oh, I agree, but I'm trying to be a realist about the whole thing.

Realistically,

New players = more accounts = more revenue = more GMs = more done for everyone.

So...

a green area (ie: a copy of the caravansary between Solhaven and Landing with a temple + level 0-5 critter hunting area) wouldn't be a bad idea IMO.

I dunno, a bunch of newbies running around with other newbies (or worse very few) is a bit scary. I'd like to see the return of the Lexicon which I think is Mentor hosted. I could be wrong, but I do remember it as a new player experience when I first started. Prizes were restriced by level as well.

A questionnaire might be interesting to pop into the Sprite quest line if possible to get the player used to begin their character:

So, where are you from?
1 - I grew up here and know the area well
2 - I have travelled for many moons from lands unknown
3 - I have no home
4 - Why do you want to know?

Are your parents alive?
1 - Yes
2 - No
3 - I don't know
4 - I don't care

Why are you dressed in such threadbare clothing?
1 - My possessions were stolen by bandits on the road
2 - I decided to begin a new life, and that meant leaving everything of value behind
3 - I am concealing my true identity, these clothes are a disguise
4 - What do you mean? What's wrong with my clothes?!

Justa thought.

PvP/CvC would be disabled of course.

If you want a questionaire, go visit the Historical Society in your nearest town. Talk the NPCs, they'll ask you questions until your ears bleed.

It's not that I want one, I was suggesting it for brand new folks so they have an inkling of "who" their character is for development. Or to at least get them started. We don't want their ears to bleed, so only a handful of questions.
