Returning to the lands 01/19/2013 02:12 PM CST
So I have been gone for a little over a decade and Gemstone has always had a special place in my heart. I always wanted to play an Empath so here I am fresh, new (for all intents and purposes), and stricken with a combination of frustration and excitement. The cost of everything in the game (with exception to tips it seems) as gone up considerably. While it would be great to find some benefactor wanting to finance a starting elven empath, I would settle for some advice. Much of the reads I am finding online for decent builds are several years old. Anyone have some advice to give?

BTW, I have been playing MMORPG style games all of my life (except WoW) and still the people who play GS are the nicest I have ever encountered. I assume it is because the new generation of RPG'ers have some difficulty reading.

Good to be home.

Teirian, Empath of the fifth training.

First off, welcome back! It's always great to have fresh faces in the lands, and while it's a little daunting coming back after a long hiatus it should also be very exciting. Gemstone has made some fabulous changes over the years so I'm sure you're going to fall in love with it all over again.

As for builds, you have a LOT of options available to you. Empaths are extremely flexible in their training -- it's one of the reasons why I love them as much as I do. Perhaps if you could tell us a basic preference of type: Healing, Spell-hunting, Weapon-hunting (or some combination thereof) it would make it easier for us to help you hone a training plan. If there are any hobbies or personal eccentricities you want to support from an RP-perspective, definitely let us know that, too.

If you're in game and would like some help there, feel free to look up Niadja in Icemule, she's always happy to take new empaths under her wing! Apprentice cobblers and alchemists are also always welcome.

Again, welcome home!

While I can't afford to "finance" you so to speak, I have a handful of spare items that I cannot seem to sell that are about to get pawned, that I could send your way literally for the pawnshop price. I have several 4x runestaves (at level 5, you can't use 4x, but you can at 10), and a few 4x one-handed falchions, and I might have a basic 4x armor or two. Let me know if you need any of these, and I will see what I can set you up with.

Thanks to everyone! I was really just kidding about the financing thing. I think that I have found a training schedule that is working for me at this younger age. It is tough being too weak to hunt, not enough skill to heal, etc. But I think that with a focus on armor/shield/OHB/PhysFit/HarnessPower as well as Minor Spirit/Empath spell circles I can manage to hunt (slowly with the aid of mass buffs) and help a little with healing (minor wounds).

I'll just say this: if you are having trouble hunting with an empath, you are doing something wrong. I don't mean that in a insulting manner, but I do mean that empaths are probably about the most powerful class in the game, and as long as you pay attention to the various training guides available on www.krakiipedia.org you should have no problems hunting with an empath.

I also wasn't kidding about the items! I really do have some 4x falchions, runestaves, and some other junk that I am going to be pawning, if you want to pay the pawnshop price for them. Just let me know.

OK, let's break that state, emt down. I have player an empath through 6 incarnations over a 5 year period (Thank the gods for fixskills!). Started off with OHE/shield, as many spell casters do, went to pure caster, went to THW warpath, back to pure caster, and finally back to THWs. Empaths hunt well with any build! I like the THW build because I can whack even magic immune critters. Also empaths get the best weapon AS adders of any spell casting class (although my warmage is actually a better hunter due to the effect of e-wave plus self cast haste). Initially you will want the better DS from OHE/shield (as opposed to THWs) because you won't be having spirit barrier (102) in effect. At cap, however, my empath can hunt with 102 in effect, despite the -50 weapon AS penalty.

My best experience is with spell casting, since weapon hunting is a bit too monotonous for my liking. If you're interested in playing a spellcaster who has absolutely no weapon skills and just enough armor so it doesn't interfere with casting, feel free to drop me a line. You can also have a look at a post I'd made a while back that someone thoughtfully saved: http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Empath_training_suggestions_(saved_post) The information is skewed toward advice for casting spells, but it can be helpful for any empath.

Also, using weapons doesn't mean you won't have a good magical attack. Wither, boneshatter, weapons, CM skills ... all good.

Ok, several notes.

1)Some skills and stats listed are above what can normally be attained. One of the perks of being high level is the aquisition of various "toys"; i.e., enhancive items. But the build worked for me even at lower levels.

2)If you want to be a pure caster, just drop all the weapon and CMan skills, and replace them with 2x spell aiming and more harness power (I'd suggest a full 2x for a pure caster build, it's what I did in that mode). Oh, and maybe some summoning lore, if you want to use fire spirit. Personally, II'd just use wizard gold wands or wands with major fire in them.

3) I am not a big fan of transformation lore. Go 2x in first aid and your RT using herbs will drop a lot, not to mention it helps you skin better. Save the MTPs and put them into spells, while carrying a good selection of herbs for healing in the field.

4) Train as much as you can in PF; you won't ever get redux if you train 2x or more in spells, but it will help a lot.
