1106 vs 1115 11/23/2011 02:00 PM CST

Is there any particular reason to use wither rather than boneshatter? Both spells can produce instant kills, while Bone shatter seems to consistently do more damage. The only thing I can think of is that wither can hit creatures without bones (works vs non-corporeal undead, for example, although can't crit kill them). As an example:

More of the same. Boneshatter consistently produces more damage per strike.

That is the main reason to use Wither. There are three other differences when you compare it to Bone Shatter.

1) Wither is enhanced through Summoning Lore instead of MMC.

2) Wither targets the same body part over and over.

3) Wither does disintegration damage instead of impact damage.

None of these really matter because they don't make up for the 2.5x mana cost of the spell. Pretty much the only time to use Wither is if you need to use a CS spell and the target doesn't have bones.

Both spells are enchanced by manipulation lore. Summoning lore for wither gives a chance of a fourth cycle of damage. I have some summoning lore; note that I do often get a 4th cycle of damage with wither. This fourth cycle tends to do a lot more damage than the other three (which are extremely feeble compared to the three cycles I get with bone shatter). I suppose if I went crazy with summoning lore I could get the full 4 cycles of damage every cast, but a) it's too costly in TPs (IMO), and b) while it might make wither as damaging as bone shatter, the spell would still cost 2.5 times the mana.

As noted, it's probably best to use wither on critters that are immune to boneshatter.

Bone shatter tends to be my go-to attack spell in most circumstances, though I will use wither if the target is particularly susceptible to crit kills or refuses to stun. Triton combatants are a good example of such. They don't stun at all, but since wither stacks crits on the same location, a cast can frequently kill them quicker than draining their HP.

Ok, now this also brings up another possibility for a modification to this spell. The body part chosen is apparently selected at random; I'd like to see the ability to target this spell on a specific body part. Perhaps make this ability lore dependent if necessary.

From the standpoint of one who is hurt by empath spells, rather than one who casts them, wither is the nastier spell and there isn't any doubt about it. Give Heralds boneshatter rather than wither, and the Citadel would be a much less difficult hunt.

I picked two that had close end rolls and were over 150. The cloudy tendrils at the end of 1115 means it got an extra cycle due to summoning lore. You can see how it struck over and over to the hand until the weapon was dropped. Then moved to the body. For 15 mana she did 101 damage, stunned the target and made it drop a weapon.

For bone shatter she struck them in the back and did 95 damage. It also stunned and cost us 6 mana.

Both stunned. I'm sure that if bone shatter had struck the hand it would have forced a weapon drop too. Wither did do 6 more damage, but only because of summoning lore and it still cost us 2.5x the mana to do that extra 6 damage. That's not a good trade off to me.

I fully admit that this is way to small of a sample to draw any conclusive evidence. As a crossbow user, I haven't put any serious research into either spell. I'm basing my assessment only on my own limited experimentation with them.

Lets theorize some...
Ignoring the fact that wither works on the boneless, the next big difference is targetting. Wither attacks the same area over and over until it's destroyed and then moves on to a close body part. What I end up seeing is that wither will take 3-4 cycles to actually remove a body part. We see that in Gwen's examples too if you back up and look at the logs.

In order for Wither to really be effective, I think you'd need a rediculously high strike roll. If you could do enough damage in one or two cycles to burn through an arm, you'd actually have cycles to spare when you reached the body or head.

Also, this annoys me:

IMO, critter spells always seem to have a greater effect on characters than vice versa. I suspect that creatures are maxxed out in the lores relevant to enhancing the effects of the spells.

THROGG
Is there any particular reason to use wither rather than boneshatter? Both spells can produce instant kills, while Bone shatter seems to consistently do more damage.

Mirrami
In order for Wither to really be effective, I think you'd need a rediculously high strike roll.

Except for a few situations where an Empath has a significant amount of Mental Mana Control skill and low warding margins, Wither (1115) is more lethal than Bone Shatter (1106). The other bonus, as you indicated, is that it affects all creature types.

THROGG
This fourth cycle tends to do a lot more damage than the other three (which are extremely feeble compared to the three cycles I get with bone shatter). I suppose if I went crazy with summoning lore I could get the full 4 cycles of damage every cast, but a) it's too costly in TPs (IMO), and b) while it might make wither as damaging as bone shatter, the spell would still cost 2.5 times the mana.

Mirrami
I picked two that had close end rolls and were over 150. The cloudy tendrils at the end of 1115 means it got an extra cycle due to summoning lore. You can see how it struck over and over to the hand until the weapon was dropped. Then moved to the body. For 15 mana she did 101 damage, stunned the target and made it drop a weapon.
For bone shatter she struck them in the back and did 95 damage. It also stunned and cost us 6 mana.

The fourth cycle is the same strength as the third (primary) cycle.

The cloudy tendrils are not the fourth cycle. That happens on every cast and it's only concussion (blood loss) damage.

Both of you are also comparing total damage which isn't the strength of Wither. When trained appropriately, Wither kills through crits, not blood loss. Most high level spells don't rely on killing a creature by taking their hit points below 1. Instead, you hope to crit kill with 1-2 casts, making total damage moot.

Mirrami
If you could do enough damage in one or two cycles to burn through an arm, you'd actually have cycles to spare when you reached the body or head.

It would require an extremely high warding margin to burn through a fresh (no current wounds) location with the first two cycles. However, you can achieve what you're after with the lore bonus using the fourth cycle. After the third cycle hits, the location usually has sustained enough damage that if the fourth cycle triggers, it'll have to spread to a surrounding location. Thus, if the spell hits the right arm and the first three cycles burn through it, the fourth cycle will spread to the chest, which can be lethal.

Mirrami
Also, this annoys me:
Gwen got wither to strike the eye! And it pathetically poked at the eye for three cycles, never doing enough to get a death crit on the eye. Then after destroying the eye without killing the Jarl, wither moves on to the body instead of the other eye. THANKS WITHER! You're the best! <3

Again, the "cloudy tendrils" isn't the fourth cycle, so it didn't spread to the body at all. If the right eye was missing and the fourth cycle would have triggered, it would have moved to the left eye. The logic used to determine if the effect should target a new location is such that it always will target another vital area if the first location was vital. However, you can move from a non-vital to a vital (right or left leg -> abdomen).

>>When trained appropriately, Wither kills through crits, not blood loss. Most high level spells don't rely on killing a creature by taking their hit points below 1. Instead, you hope to crit kill with 1-2 casts, making total damage moot.<<

OK, what appropriate training? Can we get an idea of how many ranks are decent? Bone shatter and wither are both enhanced by manipulation lore. MMC enhances bone shatter, summoning lore apparently, according to the docs, does not increase the effect of the spell, but only the number of damage cycles. Of course, more cycles probably mean more chances to wither the target. But how many ranks of summoning lore produces this extra cycle?

Maybe you aren't aware, but there is this really awesome site called Krakiipedia. It has a plethora of GS related information, including details about the majority of current spells. The spell information is really easy to find too! All you have to do is type in the spell number in the search box, press the search button, and it takes you directly to the spell's page. Pretty neat, right?

Naw, much easier to ask on the forums and have other people answer you.

Lies! I haven't officially counted, but I am confident that it takes far fewer keystrokes to look it up on KP. So far fewer keystrokes, in fact, that it more than makes up for the need to open a bookmarked site in a new tab.

I do believe there is even a 'LMKTFY' site, similar to the 'LMGTFY' I will endeavor to use said site in all my reference to KP from now on, and see what truth there is to the adage about leading a horse to water.

I went to krakiipedia; while helpful, it didn't have the answers to all my questions.

>>Except for a few situations where an Empath has a significant amount of Mental Mana Control skill and low warding margins, Wither (1115) is more lethal than Bone Shatter (1106). ---Estild

Thanks for the clarification, Estild. I am only 2x spell trained while overhunting so I don't get high wardings. Also, I tend to use CS attacks on things that don't crit kill easily (I'm actually trying to bleed them to death). It definitely colors my impression of the spell.

I guess what you should take away from my posts is that Wither is not for Warrior Empaths who lack a high CS.

This info on the spell does lead to more questions though. We know that most pure casting empaths have a significant amount of MMC. That leads me to wonder how high of a warding margin would they would need to overcome their own bonuses to 1106 and make 1115 a better option?

I don't have any desire to drop the crossbow and test that so, someone else will have to say.

Here is a point that could use clarification. Define "significant" MMC skill ... 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, 2x?

And are there specific break points for the effect of manipulation lore, or is it a diffuse spectrum? I used to have 60 ranks of this, was underwhelmed by the number of crit kills I was getting with boneshatter, so I dropped back down to 50. Seems to be having about the same effect. If I had gone up to 70 instead, would I have seen a noticable increase?

Hmm, now I forget ... who is the gal who has that website with all the lore effects? Maybe that site can answer my questions...

Right; Carabele is the name I couldn't remember. Unfortunately, even her almost comprehensive lore benefit chart doesn't answer my questions. I guess the lore additions are new enough that she hasn't gotten enough data (or else she isn't updating her site). Bah, humbug!

I thought at one point I read that she was going inactive, though she was leaving the site available for reference. (I may be mis-remembering, so please don't take that as gospel.)

Given that it's based off a spreadsheet I developed originally, I could probably go through the Spell List sites & news announcements and re-compile the information so we have a current one...

Mental Lore - Manipulation has nothing to do with crit kills. A crit kill is not the same thing as an instant kill.

Crit kill: (affected by Mental Mana Control)
You concentrate intently on an Ithzir janissary, and a pulse of pearlescent energy ripples toward her!
CS: +499 - TD: +329 + CvA: +25 + d100: +50 == +245
Warding failed!
The Ithzir janissary shudders with severe convulsions as pearlescent ripples envelop her body.
The Ithzir janissary is crushed for 50 points of damage!
... 40 points of damage!
Blow shatters bones in the Ithzir janissary's neck leaving its head hanging loosely!
The Ithzir janissary falls to the ground in a crumpled heap.

Instant kill: (affected by Mental Lore - Manipulation)
You concentrate intently on an Ithzir janissary, and a pulse of pearlescent energy ripples toward her!
CS: +499 - TD: +329 + CvA: +25 + d100: +72 == +267
Warding failed!
The internal skeletal structure of an Ithzir janissary implodes inward upon itself, leaving behind no support for her body or life. The Ithzir janissary falls to the ground in a lifeless mass of flesh and fractured bones.

Hmm; I usually use the two terms interchanably. Yes, the mechanisms appear different, but the results are the same (instant death), hence, I figured they were affected by the same lores. So, the first example is affected by MMC skill, while the second one shows the influence of Maniulation lore? That complicates matter even further. Humbug again, I say!

I am not certain it comes into play but your area for examples I thought might have skewed your Wither vs Shatter experiment as well. Stones and stone-based creatures perhaps are not the most effective comparison of Wither to Shatter... just a thought. No supporting documentation. :)

Well, elementals are immune to both, so that's moot. Jarls and elders aere both susceptible to wither and bone shatter, so my presumption was that they should be equally vulnerable to both. Indeed, the descriptions of these in the bestiary suggests that they are not in fact made of stone; they appear rather to be giant living beings who serve as priests and paladins of the deity Iloke.

If you use the wrong vocabulary, Throgg, you can't expect to get the right questions answered.

This thread piqued my interest in instant kill caps. It stands to reason that 1106 is most likely seeded to MLM differently than 1115 for calculating instant kills.

Estild, as several other folks have asked above, at what rank of MLM does 1115 have a higher chance to instant kill than 1106 - or are they identical - given we're considering an instant-killable bone-possessing target.

Thanks!
