How about this idea? Create a demon that, on a catastrophic failure when casting planar shift, the demon possesses the sorcerer. The demon will attack anyone in the room while in the sorcerer's body. The only way the demon leaves the sorcerer's body is when either a cleric performs an exorcism or if the sorcerer dies.
