Just curious if this has any differences from DEPARTing. Particularly in regard to Death's String (i.e. https://gswiki.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Death%27s_Sting#Long_Term_Effects_of_Death)

Dying in the RR Confluence is usually no hope of rescue, but I don't depart because I'd rather wait the 15 minutes than get another wammy to the sting on top of decaying.

And for everyone who was wondering, the answer is it gives a sting similar to decaying.

When hopelessness was first put in I think it might have made you go demonic, because the newsletters from 1990 suggested spirit death was more powerful than deeds.

So hey, it could always be worse, right?

It instantly drained all your spirit and gave you a spirit death. It didn't automatically make you go demonic unless you were out of deeds.

Don't know why I wrote it like this. I meant similar to departing (on purpose). Meaning it's not very useful as far as I can see (big surprise, eh?)

This is my recollection as well, though from the mid to late 90s. It was technically useful if you got stuck somewhere and had no idea how to get out, though if Darkness wouldn't work it's not clear Hopelessness either. Those were also the days you could lick a dagger to injure yourself, so...

That's how it was in the mid/late 90s. There could just be misinformation (or bad wording) in the newsletter on the subject. It would certainly be bad game design for spirit death to be that harsh.

The confusion for me comes from Kelfour's Edition Volume I, number V (page 18) and VII (page 25) with the way Lythe describes spirit draining. I was not there, so I have no idea.

The only spirit death I can remember witnessing back then was in 1993, I think. I'm fairly sure it wasn't due to Hopelessness, but rather a wracking mistake on the part of the player (who I'm almost positive, was Bleys). It did not cause the soul to be lost to the demonic, but it did cause an insta-decay.
