Really useful. Thanks. I'm actually surprised at how many names I don't know. I clearly wasn't paying attention that day in class!

Also I suspect PM actually means Prime Minister! Will notify David Cameron to vacate 10 Downing Street immediately!!!

Under CE, I see "Mikos".

Is that the same Mikos as was on staff 14 years ago? Or did someone re-use his name?

.

.

.

.

And if the latter, HOW COME YOU DIDN'T TELL US PLAYERS ABOUT A NAME RE-SET?!?!?!? We pay our good money every month--pay YOUR SALARIES!!--and we don't get a name re-set! I tell you, it strains credulity that all these staff perks go around, getting to do things like that which we-the-players don't! Favoritism! Outrage!

There's been no name reset that I know of. The same from 14 years ago? Yep, pretty much so.

I just didn't think you were an "apprentice", is all. I mean, you were a GM way back then!

.

.

In a completely unrelated matter, the reason your name leapt out at me was that I was recently re-reading some of my old Board printouts that I (finally!) scanned into PDFs, and ran across some of the stuff from the 2000 'Con over at the Henry VIII.

Specifically post #979 ("A Simu-Summation", in Category 8/SimuCon, Topic 4/General Discussions, by me, on 20 June 2000), including in part:
"Friday also saw a very happy young lady named Tia sidle up to me with a big grin on her face running from ear to ear. She had just played in her first game of Settlers (Tia had kindly acted as broker for the cards on Thursday evening in one of our post-tourney games), and won it! Yay, Tia! [Tia is Mikos' daughter. Aged six.]"

<short break for maths>

Now, aged twenty.

<mutter, grumble, swear>

God, I feel old. :(

Thanks for the list, Wyrom!

More names than I expected to see, which all things considered, is a GOOD THING [TM].

Actually, Methais, I left summer of 2005. I had been burning the candle at both ends long enough that I'd given myself migraines that it took four years to get past.

<I just didn't think you were an "apprentice", is all. I mean, you were a GM way back then!

I was, Krakii, but after being gone for eight years, for all that's stayed the same in GS a lot has changed too, and if you're going to come up to speed you've got to start somewhere.

Actually, the timing's been fortunate. CiS has been amazing on several levels, and the chance to RP in Talador and the coronation felt a lot like years past.

It's good to be back.

btw, Tia will be 21 next month, and I can't recall the last time she lost at Settlers.

Radeek's right, we are.

Think of it like a part time position. It's not a position we really fill. Just some GMs who still contribute in some way, but can't meet all the requirements we have. You basically have to be pretty awesome.

Welcome back, Mikos. I was surprised to see your name as a contributing GM for the Mist Harbor festival, and even more surprised to see it on the Staff list again.

I don't remember all the comings and goings of GMs, but I do remember you and forging.

For sake of the migraines... may I suggest you avoid the forging system? I don't think it's been touched since you left. We'd love your TLC in it, but GS should be fun, even if you're "working" as a GM.

Morden, player of, forging away right now.

Change CGM into EGM: Emeritus GameMaster. Scribes is one of the three and once used the term to describe his position. It sounds more prestigious and in line with what you're saying.

What's that huge 'CE' section mean? I was kind of surprised to see the 3P section with as many names as Magic, Combat, and Technical (ie: "dev") but names under 'CE' also strike me as "dev" so, not sure. Cutting Edge?

Customer Experience. It involves things relating to customer service (so like answering the Referral queue) that the Development side of the house would typically not be doing. CE folks also play NPCs in events, or run merchants, and the like.

They are the public face.

.

Dev is where you get called to join the Dark Side. :)

Re: Staff Listing 09/02/2014 01:20 PM CDT

Customer Experience, I think. So, probably technically savvy GMs who happen to work with players. If you've ever had an item issue that was broken and needed fixing, you probably had a CE GM in front of you if they were technically inclined to fix your issue. They probably work events more often than Dev GMs as well (I'd imagine Felthrop is in CE, for example, since he has custom scripts/work he does, but also works with customers directly in-game).

DEV GMs are likely not so forward facing in terms of the players. But it's hard to say, my guess is as good as anyone's.

OIC. So Vanah deals in the 'Customer Experience' of joining the Dark Side? (That's a joke. True she's a more public face, but seems to know mechanics better than the best of the KP editors.)

I suspect that the Dev side is what they used to call "coding resources", inasmuch as more of the technical "build-y" type stuff gets done there.

Yet there are coding-capable people on the CE side, too. It's just that they will be more along the lines of "new verby" stuff, compared to "new spelly" or "new critter" stuff.

Re: Staff Listing 09/02/2014 02:04 PM CDT
So, hopefully I don't jibe anyone, at least not in a bad way. And I'm cool with being a 'customer' instead of a 'player' and whatever vernacular is preferred. But that stacks about 10 3P and 10 CE against 10 devs. Point being, this post is very useful so I appreciate it. And I appreciate all the hard work by NIRs with crazy titles. Didn't even know there were 55ish active GMs. Prefaces aside...

I guess everyone must know this but, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8To-6VIJZRE

I'm still in the process of getting a great friend in Tokyo to play GS (also what I call the Dark Side, TM). He was majorly turned off by the website, FE options, and just the difficulty of his first time logging in. I think he even said, "Nine out of ten people who might try this won't." He's a lead developer at a Tokyo software company so, I'm not much to be in the know from his perspective or from SIMU's.

Obviously, 'developers' here means like, game development. And it's very clear, GMs aren't cubbyholed to one role in practice! (Look at me, I'm Vanah Customer Experience and I develop a whole ton of items and a slaver ship!)

Still, gotta say, the website, while not 90's, is 2000's. The official FE portability is absolute naff, so much so that I haven't used an official FE in about four years (and that was kinda briefly...got to go back to 2006 era when I still used Mac OS normally...and Avalon SUCKS). And I guess the credit card stuff to play a trial was ruled out on a test because existing players are jerks and started scripting without strict accountability to sell and profit.

Now, I'm not pointing the finger because I don't have the answers here myself; just an attempt at constructive criticism and some snickers. But when I refuse to use proprietary software as much as possible, yet the one piece of programming I pay for, and not at all a small amount, can't even give me a decent free software front end to run in GNU/Linux, it does make me wonder. I mean, my friend has his own Kanji study app he sells for a few bucks that he does in his own time. Can't we just, take a little of that money and get a new forum engine that I don't have to click through the folder I just posted in so it isn't "unread"? Get a sleeker webpage? Get an FE universal enough that we don't have people still wanting the one from when I was in high school on Windoze? (I also get that I turn out to be fairly satisfied with Tillmen's profanity FE which most people would gag at.)

Sometimes, I can't compute. And maybe these people are not listed because they aren't GMs. But where's the dev for user-end software?! It's a company with profits based on the internet, but the FEs, website, and forums were last prodded with a stick shorter than 10 feet before I even had friend with cell phones...

I often wondered if there was a way to hire Tillmen but, there's a lot of reasons I never post that idea...(which probably is not novel). I don't say that whatsoever to discredit any GMs working now, just that I use his software and it was updated in the last decade.
