Attuned items & LoreSinging + Shops 10/24/2021 08:06 AM CDT

"This item is restricted to use by an adventurer you can't quite determine."

No Bard should ever see this line in a LoreSong. We should always be able to find the exact name of the person to whom an attuned item belongs.

Also, no pawnshop should ever offer such an item for sale. Attuning to a specific character always come with auto-"marked" status. (I am less convinced about "attuned to an account" because people may want to keep their alternates anonymous.)

Isn't that the message when the Attunee is offline? I mean, it does not solve the problem of re-uniting the item with the proper owner unless you sing to it a LOT ... but there is some little hope at least.

As Luxelle mentioned, this is what happens when someone is offline. The name isn't produced until it can convert the numerical index to a string, which cannot be done when a character is offline. GameMasters have some tools, but even we struggle with some cases of this.

As for items that are attuned being sold, attunement has dozens of different ways they can be handled. There are some global systems for gear-type items that we use. Then there are different methods to attune scripted items. A lot of us try to use a standard these days, but decades of varying ways has made this next to impossible to have any sort of "version control." And even with our standards, it's not easy to flip flop between character and account attunement on scripted items. Basically, what I am trying to say is, there just isn't a way to have the pawnshop know everything here.

Oh I get it, but we'd need to build a system to look through every single way to attune and item and be able to check that. There are items out there that we don't even have a way to know they are attuned unless we try to use them or someone tells us that.

I think I will likely Assist/Refer to have the item looked at (it is "pretty *&@#!&$%@#ing good" for a melee person...) and see if the GMs want to take it from me/return it to that attuned person.
(And failing that, since it was on a town pawnshop table, I will ask if they can remove the attunement, because I have a melee person who wouldn't mind using it...)
