Art Workshop followup 05/03/2019 08:04 PM CDT
A big thank you to everyone who came out to the live figure drawing workshop last night! And an additional thank you to the Order of the Azure Sun for agreeing to partner with the event. I hope that a fun time was had by all.

While last year's focused on longer poses with two models, this year's workshop emphasized gesture drawing and quick sketching over longer studies. In addition, the setting permitted some interesting dynamics between cast light and shadow while outdoors at night.

Gathered for posterity is a snapshot of all the sketches rendered through the workshop's duration - unless I missed any by mistake! I will let any artists come forward who wish to have their sketches publicly attributed to them.

A roughly inked sketch of a barn owl caught mid swoop sweeps the page, the perspective such that one outstretched wing dominates the foreground. Its splayed pinions catch the air and curl upward at the ends.

Long, loose lines formed of dark ink spring to life on the pale parchment to form a series of figures, neither particularly linked to its neighbor in how it is presented. Several are standing poised, boxy lines forming the hint of plated armor, while others hold dynamic poses - a staff held forward, and a bow drawn taut.

A small woman is rendered in quick, dark lines, her figure leaning back to form an exaggerated C-shape as her left arm is held straight outward with a bow in hand. Caught mid-shot, the long bow's arms have sprung forward, while her right hand remains aloft by her cheek.

Long, wavering lines spill from the precise almond outlines of eyes, simulating a heat haze or a spilled glow. Wispy, blurred curls are loosely sketched at length around them, with only the faintest lines to hint at jaw, cheekbones, and nose. The mouth has slightly more definition and is caught nearly flat, with just the faintest downturn.

Little more than a framework, several long lines and curves capture the essence of a short, slender person, a youth or a woman, drawing back on a bow taller than themselves. Their stance is centered, their arm raised in a precise angle, and though no details are rendered, the set of their shoulders and head gives the impression of focus and determination.

"Sketching workshop..."
Below the neatly written title, a lightly scratched figure of a young girl is suggested gripping a bow in her left hand, the string drawn taut. The impression of concentration upon her face is lightened by a pair of pert dimples. Shadows of cross-hatching fill in the space beneath her tilted chin and between the segments of her armor, while hiding all detail of the back of her form.

The blocky shape of a target dummy reels off balance, caught short of falling over. What struck it is not depicted, unless it can be inferred by a series of concentric ripples that show only as bands of negative space falling at an angle across the dummy and the hazily sketched background of yard and wall.

An armored figure, caught hastily and in profile, stands with casual nonchalance that belies the sheer weight and heft of his armor. A sledgehammer spins on the air before him, its implied motion controlled despite its size. The figure's gauntleted hand is held out steady, fingers splayed with assurance.

"Sketching workshop..."
Below the neatly written title, a scribble-lined human woman hoists a huge sledgehammer above her head, her simply lined face suggesting an expression of triumph. Glints of light outline the contours of the weapon from below, hiding the head of the hammer in shadow.

A slender, short-haired human woman sits on a stone ledge, her back straight while her head is tilted down to regard a round owl perched on the stone in front of her. One leg is folded beneath her while the other hangs loose, toe brushing the ground below, as fabric from her robe pools around her in gentle folds. The lines are thin and loose on one side of the figure while on the opposite they broaden and spread into deep swathes of shadow.

Strokes of graceful ink gather together to form the graceful outline of this sketched woman. She stands in a waiting pose, her feet slightly separated as her arms lie hidden behind her. The darker inked strikes comprise the form of her face, while careful dotting indicates her speckled eyes - which are narrowed in a hint of suspicion. Her heart shaped face tilted up slightly in a show of pride, the ink gradually forms from a slight shadowing on one side to none at all on the opposite.

Many scratches of dark ink comprise a feminine form, coalescing together to represent starkly a Human woman standing in a sideways defensive posture. The shade of the ink alternates subtly on her form - darkening from left to right to indicate a source of light. She holds her staff out threateningly, inked flurries pooling together into a large plume within her hand, forming a large and lightly inked orb. What is seen of her face is lightly sketched, her eyes narrowed in concentrated determination.
