Veil Iron and Friends 04/22/2020 10:25 PM CDT
Have you all heard of veil iron!? The naturally 5x, ultra rare weapon and armor material that is so good it can't be player enchanted or ensorcelled? Is ensorcelled even a word? My web browser doesn't seem to know!

I hope you're ready for some lore!

From the Wiki:

Veil iron is one of the most rare metals in Elanthia, the purest samples of it almost too valuable to price. Found within large meteorites that have fallen from the sky, veil iron is incredibly strong and durable. When forged, it usually has an enchantment slightly higher than vultite, and the most pure form of veil iron has the ability to drain items of magical power within close proximity. It is predominantly black or charcoal grey in color, speckled or streaked with small bits of white or blue.

Veil iron was actually one of the first metals found by the denizens of Elanthia, long before any empire rose or fell, even before the Ur-Daemon war. Veil iron spearheads from long-ago ancient tribes that existed during the Rule of Drakes have even been found, and paintings depicting meteors falling from the sky have also been seen on the walls of caves from the same long-gone people.

Woah.

Real talk. Veil iron is bad. It is anti-magic only some of the time and is super inconsistent. Sure, Sanctum of Scale bros can't turn your veil iron weapon into a snake, but it can still be weapon fired.

It works for the 2 or 3 cmans that require anti-magic weaponry that 2 or 3 characters actually train in, yet still pales in comparison to a standard ensorcell.

So let's brain storm! How can this weapon and armor material get an upgrade?

Idea numero uno. An innate flare that ignores spell DS. Kroderine and krodera should also get this. Fun History Fact: This was an ability the grimswarm had early on in the form of a special attack, but Pure Tears got it removed from the game pretty quick.

Idea number two. Innate demon bane with special flares against demons. Circumvents the entire "needs to be 8x and holy to hit" thing into "needs to be 8x and holy OR veil iron to hit". Of course, then we'd need a hunting ground with demons.

Should armor have a flare to block spells similar to kroderine? To a lesser extent? Should kroderine block spells at a great extent?

I dunno! Go nuts!

I agree that veil iron could use better incentives to off-set its drawbacks. Unfortunately, regardless of what lore says, veil iron has become pretty common in the lands... even critters carry it occasionally. Because it this, I seriously doubt NIR will give it any sort of innate abilities that even approach those of the other metals you've mentioned (though I could see them releasing something like "pure veil iron" at an event with awesome qualities).

It would be kinda cool if veil iron weapons were given am inherant 10 CER crit weighting against magical critters (similar to how sephwir gets 10 CER to sighting).

That gave me a very random idea.

You're 100% right.

...but what if critters stopped having a chance of dropping veil iron all together?

What if instead of having future 'pure veil iron' releases, they went the other direction and said, "We're buffing current veil iron but there will be no more veil iron released. Ever. It has been common enough that all of the veil iron currently in game, in accordance to lore, is what remains."

I don't know about you but that sounds like a fantastic social experiment.

Love these ideas!

Partial to giving veil iron the demon bane (weighting or offensive bonus).

Bane can be added to shields and armor - in this case, maybe a Block-bane (increases block percentage)
