New Forging System for Armor 03/27/2019 10:41 AM CDT

Khazaann and I were talking about a few wish lists. He had this idea for making armor which he created a long time ago.

************************************************************************
NEW ARMOR FORGING SYSTEM SPECS - (Weapons and Repair are different)
*************************************************************************

Requirements:
anvil
forging hammer
sheets of metal *
patterns **
furnace w/bellows

* Sheets come from slabs of metal, created in the smelter, from ore
found in the mines. (see smelting docs)

** Patterns are pictures on the wall above the anvil. Once a blacksmith
has studied and successfully created 10 of the same pieces, The study
messaging changes to a glance, incurring no round time at all.

Each completed armor piece requires 2 formed pieces that are assembled in
final step of the process. The 2 pieces are either Top/Bottom or Front/Back
pieces, depending on the choice of armor piece created.

Front/Back - Breastplate, Sleeves, Greaves, Helmet, Greathelm, Aventail
Top/Bottom - Gauntlets, Bracers (wrist NEW)

Making the Individual Parts

Step 1 : Study the Pattern

study <type> pattern
<study messaging>
<round time 10-20 seconds>

Step 2: Forming the piece.

put sheet of metal on the anvil
<study check>
strike anvil
<hammering messaging>
<skill check>
<failure check>
<round time 10-15 seconds>

Step 3 : Firing the piece

get partially formed sheet and put in furnace
<tongs messaging>
<round time 2-5>
operate bellows (push/pull)
<bellows messaging>
get glowing sheet and put on anvil
<tongs messaging>
<round time 2-5>

step 4: Continue Forming the piece

study <type> pattern
<study messaging>
<round time 3-5>
strike anvil
<study check>
<hammering messaging>
<skill check>
<failure check>
<repeat check (if not finished go to step 3)>
<round time 5-10 seconds>

Step 5 : Tempering the piece

get formed sheet and put in furnace
<tongs messaging>
<round time 3-5>
operate bellows (push/pull)
<bellows messaging>
get glowing sheet and put in water
<tongs messaging>
<cooling messaging>
<round time 10-15>
Take finished armor piece from water.
<water messaging>

Study check: If the player did not study the pattern, the player will not
be able to strike the anvil and make the piece.

Skill check: Algorithm to check if proficiency is gained from this rep.

Failure check: Algorithm to check if this rep has caused a failure which

results in an unusable damaged sheet of metal.

Repeat check: Minimum of 2 reps, maximum of 10 reps per sheet. Depending

on proficiency in blacksmithing. Each step gives a chance
to increase skill but also gives a chance at failure.

Assembling the Individual Pieces into a usable piece of armor

Step 1: Attaching the 2 pieces together

Put one piece on anvil
Hold other piece in left hand
Hold forging hammer in right hand
strike anvil
<assembly messaging>
<skill check>
<fail check 1>
<round time 10-15 seconds>

Step 2: Securing the 2 pieces

Take rivets from bucket
<rivets messaging (handful of 5)>
strike anvil
<assembly messaging (5 rivets, one at a time)>
<skill check>
<fail check 2>
<repeat check (if not finished repeat step 2)>
<round time 10-15 seconds>

Step 3 : Only if a failure in step 2 occurs

remove rivets from armor.
<removal messaging>
<round time 10-15>
<repeat step 2 messaging>

Skill check: Algorithm to check if proficiency is gained from this rep.

Fail check 1: Algorithm to check if this assembly was done correctly.

Failure results in an unsuccessful assembly.

Fail check 2: Algorithm to check if this rep has caused a failure which

results in an ruined, but fixable, assembly.

Repeat check: Minimum of 3 reps, maximum of 5 reps per piece. Depending

on proficiency in blacksmithing. Each step gives a chance

to increase skill but also gives a chance at failure.

Summary of Forging NEW Armor

The MINIMUM number of steps and round time to complete any piece of armor
are as follows. Round time in ():

Minimums are ONLY achievable by a MASTER blacksmith.

Step 2,3,4,3,4,5 - Left/Top/Front Piece (60 seconds)

Step 2,3,4,3,4,5 - Right/Bottom/Back Piece (60 seconds)

Step 1,2,2,2,3 - Attaching the 2 pieces together. (40 seconds)

All Round times are approximate.

For a master to create a piece of armor, it would take a minimum of
200 seconds from start to finish, barring any failures, hesitancy or
lag.

The following items are in the room, unusable and are messaged into the
forging process:

patterns, tongs, bucket of rivets

Verbs used in this skill:
Study (NEW)
Strike
Operate (NEW)
Put
Get/Take
Remove

I like the idea.... but what would there be to create a demand for it like there is for player forged weapons and make it worth the tedium?

Player-forged weapons are in demand because the AvD bonus isn't other-wise available from weapons and it doesn't limit what services can be done to them... without something similar, it would be next to impossible selling player-forged armor for more as one could make hunting in the same amount of time.

Maybe have perfect armor have an AP that's 3 lower then it would normally be (2 for superior and 1 for well-made)....?

Would also be nice if skins/hides could be used to make leather for the leather armor groups (warriors can already make them into leather for sheaths) as well....

The anvil for forging is just the beginning.

What else? Maybe workbench for leather armor using skins that are normally sold to the furrier.
Maybe even a smelter. What happens to blades that are forged and are not superior? There get pawned. What if you could throw blades into a smelter and get a slab again?

Think of the possibilities. Unfortunately, with weapon forging being updated, it could lead to the reemergence of breakage. Breakage (shivver) is not what anyone wants. Maybe for player made weapons only, but the player made weapons need to be far superior to what the shops sell to make them more popular.

Player forged armor could potentially be lighter, have a lower AP, have a higher CvA, and inherent resistances of 1 - 3% for all damage types.

I can't tell you how many times I wish I could just smelt my non superior items and try again. It's one reason I am holding on to my eonake and white ora pieces... in the hope that someday I can just smelt them and get my eonake back. I would also like to be able to combine slabs together. It's not like it isn't possible because it actually IS. For example, Fired in Fire has smiths combining X amount of bars of (metal) to craft themselves a weapon and use various techniques to accomplish that.

In regards to armor - overall I like it, but I agree on the "demand of it" per se because why would I want a player to forge it as opposed to using the NPC to craft the armor? Can the armor be lighter? Does it provide a bonus somewhere?

I think that using pelts from skinning to create leather armor is also a great idea.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great idea.. I'm just trying to help improve upon it. :-)

Player made items should be better on many ways. they could be as unique as you like and should hold properties different than purchased/found items.

If you are hunting and the monster swings a player made weapon at you, you should know it right away.

Make patterns that are only player made or metals that are only player smelted.
