History question 01/10/2005 10:45 AM CST
Just wondering if someone has some info about Gnomes. I've read all the books I can find. I'm still trying to find just what they were refugees from when they came to Kermoria. Also, where does King Benpar IV currently reside?

Thanks!

Gorbesh.

Some gnomes lived in peace with the Gorbesh though. So I don't see how this would pertain to all of them. Unless that relationship changed.

That would be the Albarian continent, which is down southwards of Kermoria.

I know they came from Albaria. I'm just wondering why after living in relative peace with the Gorbesh and other races of that continent...would they flee to Kermoria? And what of the King? Where is he now?

Re: History question (Albarian Timeline - the Luethran Ages) - long 01/15/2005 10:44 AM CST
Note -- This timeline covers the continent of Albaria, the landmass on Elanthia to the south of Kermora (Kermoria being the continent where the Five Provinces are). Cloaked in a near-endless blanket of snow, Albaria's history has unfolded along a much different path than that of the north. Six races have occupied Albaria and shaped its being. They are:

The Luethra: The Luethra are a long-lived, advanced race. Their civilization began around the the same time as the Elves and Dwarves -- while the latter two controlled and were for the most part the sole occupants of Kermoria for much of early history, the Luethra held the same stature on Albaria. Even after the coming of other races in the south, the Luethras remained the dominant race for a considerable time, and this period of domination over Albaria is divided into four ages. Their civilization is long since fallen now, though, and we know little about them and how they actually lived save that their lifespans were comparable to the Elven/Dwarven lifespans, that they were magically powerful, and that they had a keen interest in astrology.

The Gnomes: A small race of tinkerers and mechanics, the Gnomes appeared were the second race to appear on Albaria. Tiny, the Gnomes in their society honor their smallness -- the shorter a Gnome is, the more they are revered and acknowledged in their culture. Where the Luethras, and later the Gorbesh, strove for complete unity, the Gnomes separated, forming several distinctive societies.

The Shaerek: A race of avian humanoids living in the high, frozen mountains of northwestern Albaria, the Shaerek are a theocratic society. They worship a singular Bird-God, and their civilization is led by their High Priest. Because they live so high up, there is a great physical boundary between the Shaerek and the rest of the continent. But it is not for that reason alone that they are a reclusive people -- it is also due to their belief in the White Wind. The White Wind is a being/occurance that protects the Shaerek by obliterating their enemies with fierce winds. To retain this protection, the Shaerek must strive for purity, thus their reluctance to involve themselves with the other peoples. They are not a hostile race, though -- they have been cooperative with the Luethras and Gnomes.

The Nirejis: Standing taller than a Gnome and a Dwarf, but still quite shorter than a Human, the Nireji race has not had a tremendous impact on the course of Albarian history. With their stout stature, muzzled faces, almost furry bodies, and clawed hands, a Nireji closely resembles a mole -- and like those beings, the Nirejis also prefer the safety and comfort of burrowed-out homes. Short lived, lacking powerful magic, and never attaining a centralized government, the Nirejis were essentially carried along with the flow of history, never rising above their simpler existence.

The Gorbesh: A militaristic, conquering race are the Gorbesh -- they brought about an Empire in Albaria, taking up the legacy of the Luethra. Tall, bulky, and powerful, the Gorbesh are expert warriors, boat-builders, and sailors. The Gorbesh are also extremely religious, relying upon astrology and prophecy in their Empire. In recent times, a group shot off from the main Gorbesh society -- the Kaldar seek to return to the purer, natural lives their people lived long ago.

The Ocular: A mysterious race, the Ocular possess powers of shape-shifting.The ability to take on forms of others, with cost, makes their goals all the more dangerous. At the dictates of their God, the Ocular have attempted to spread chaos, war, and dissent throughout all Elanthia. While their society exists in Albaria, the Ocular have also spread out, with some even living in Kermoria and the Qi Archipelago.

And so it goes.

Credits go to GMs Cadaya and Kaspien for creating/sharing all this data... and to me for saving it and regurgitating it every so often. Heh.

Re: History question (While we're at it, how 'bout Kermoria's Timeline?) - long 01/15/2005 10:58 AM CST
THE ELANTHIAN TIMELINE Note -- This timeline covers only Kermoria. Kermoria is the continent on the planet of Elanthia where most of our adventures take place; the Provinces of Ilithi, Therengia, Forfedhdar, and Zoluren are here, and the Qi Archipelago is right off the continent's coast.

Index I. The Age of Myths: Prehistory. Is anything from this period of time true? Much of the knowledge of this period consists of religious stories, legends, and oral tradition. There are no records from this age, as civilization was yet to truly begin forming. They're legends -- take them with a grain of salt.

II. The Time of the Clans: The Time of the Clans marks the period of Elanthian history where the continent's people were scattered, formed into innumerous small (and often violent) groups. Very few cities existed in this era, as it was rare for so many people to be gathered together in one group (not to mention that many of the clans were nomadic). Without cities, there were also no places to store records and traditions, so most information was handed down orally; many accounts of this period will lack historical authenticity, and will be more in the way of symbolic stories. There is little in the way of accurate dating, as no universal record keeping system had been established.

III. The Imperial Age: From Akroeg's Clan-consolidation to Teiro's capture of Throne City, this period of Elanthian history covers the rule of an Empire over the bulk of the continent. Bringing relative peace and stability, the Seven Star Empire allowed learning, culture, and the arts to flourish, along with politics. Those records surviving from this period are marked with a high degree of accuracy, both in content and in dating. This is also the first period a universal form of dating was utilized, as the Verekian Calendar was invented here and applied through the entire Seven Star Empire.

IV. The Time of Chaos: The Time of Chaos is a period of Elanthian history defined by near constant upheaval, turmoil, and warfare. The Empire, which had ruled the lands for so long, was gone, and with it went the stability and order it offered. Many records from this time were lost, and it will prove difficult to accurately date many events during this period, as the Verekian Calendar has gone out of use. The later creation of the Trade Calendar would enable historical accuracy again, but briefly, before the rise of the Dragon Priests.

V. The Dragon's Empire: This time period marks the age of the rule of Dzree's Dragon Priest Empire, from its founding until her death. The Priests carried out a bizarre quest for truth and fact, but their devotion was only to their version of history -- anything else was to be purged. They produced many scholarly works which contradicted previously held beliefs, and many records they disagreed with were destroyed (and the tellers, silenced).

VI. Modern Times: You guessed it. The Modern Times, from the fall of the Dragon Priests up till today (and tomorrow, and the day after...). Civilation is in high swing, things are relatively peaceful and prosperous. Information is generally extremely detailed, well-dated, and accurate, for the most part, though a few folk legends and tall tales crop up from time to time, but nothing of the magnitude that occured prior to History.
