Name Flush 11/26/2016 09:45 AM CST
Just to clarify I am NOT trying to start another "OMG your name is terrible" thread, but is there any way someone can flush the name generator? I am trying to re roll a bunch of characters and the suggestions are terrible to say the least. It is suggesting names like Bus, Lame, Dope, Fat, or names that are just plain gibberish.

Thanks!

The name generator has pretty much always been gibberish. I would not remotely rely on it for choosing a name. Also, good, free names DO still exist, even though the generator can't provide them.

As I've recommended before, other languages can give you great names for a character.

Just try an alternate spelling. Like instead of Thief you could put Teef, or if that's taken then Theef, or if that's taken than Theefe.

I also recommend a full name involving a terrible pun or meme, like Thiefbro Fistswag. I know Navesi loves stuff like that.

I'm not sure if names have been moderated lately. I see a lot of "interesting" ones the last few weeks.

Stupid names aren't against policy. As a general rule, names we try to catch are ones that may have issues with mechanics (close to items, creatures) -- in some cases we can't catch all of them or the name isn't a definite issue, and we can only suggest a rename (My- names, Moon- names for example).

While I'd personally like if it people stayed away from "stupid" names like "Lame" -- using the OP example, well... there's really nothing WRONG with it. It basically falls under the "Stupid" category, and if you want to play your entire career being known as Lame, I mean -- that's on you. We have lots of examples of people who regret their choices later on and then have to live with it.

That said, never hesitate to REPORT (once, please) a name you feel may be unacceptable. We look at them, and review them. As GMs if we feel we aren't sure personally, we reach out to each other. It doesn't go ignored, it's just the general idea of what is a bad name is often perception-based player to player. As GMs we look (try to, it's hard - we have that same perception-based feeling a lot!) with a wider lens.

General things to remember: Let's say someone names themselves a semi-pop-culturey name. I'll use an example of one that's actually taken, Kanye. Yeah, it makes you think of Kanye West -- but the name itself isn't a BAD name. The problem with names like this would come if say, our player Kanye made himself look like Kanye West, gave himself the last name and went around talking about Kim, North and Saint. So if someone is doing THAT we want to know -- because then that behavior isn't okay.

I hope that helps assuage some of the feelings with names.

My favorite thing about these names are that they're pronounceable.

But they're pronounced Boos, Lah-may, Doh-pay, and Faht, of course.

I might have rolled up an Elothean Paladin named 'Hanku' at one point just to give her an aneurysm.

As far as names go...honestly?

People care far too much. I'd much rather someone have an interesting, amusing, and easy to type, name than some 4th hand super RP transliteration of sanskrit into S'kra then dwarvish with deep cultural meanings that ends up looking like someone set fire to a blender containing a thesaurus, a game of scrabble, and a very angry woodmouse.

IL'ililili'lofhtcus might be great. But I'm basically going to instantly go 'nope' and turn to talk to the guy named 'Bobth' or 'Woodchucker' or 'Lightpole', because...they seem like more fun.

I was just wanting some nice feminine names and thought if the generator was flushed it might free up some pretty nifty ones that haven't been used in years.

I really like this Elanthian racial name generator and would like to see a similar engine replace the current name generator.
