What to hunt after Rock Trolls? 01/15/2015 11:18 AM CST

Heyo all,

I'm a ranger at his 21st circle, and I'm gettin' tired of huntin' Rock Trolls near Kearna (sp?) Village. I like the fact that they have boxes AND skins ... so wondering what's a good creature to hunt that's a lil harder than Rock Trolls and has boxes and skins.

Thanks in advance,

Most of the the skill ranges on the bestiary level list on elanthipedia have not been updated but it will give you a rough idea of hunting progression and it'll show what loot/skinning you can expect.

You might try hunting fire maidens/fire sprites and immature firecats. https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/RanikMap14
Watch out for the fire maidens' fire shard spell. The Essence of Yew spell can help protect you from it. This is probably your most local option.

or zombie/skeletal kobold headhunters on the Darkmist Moor https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/RanikMap64c in Ilithi.
These might be a little too tough but you won't know for sure till you try.

I recently trained a character up from 0 to 500ish in combat skills (in TF) focusing on creatures that carried boxes and were skinnable. You can't really do it at all times - there's definitely some gaps in the progression. That said, I found skinning super easy to learn, especially with arranging. So one strategy is to quick lock skinning and then hunt a box dropping creature. Also realize that as a ranger, it's easy to catch up either skinning or locksmithing if one falls behind your combat skills.

In regards to your immediate question, I would check out snowbeasts south of Leth and gain some combat skills until you can progress to the snowbeast/granite gargoyle area north of Shard. If snowbeasts are too difficult, you could try silver-backed bears by wolf clan, although I've never hunted them myself.

I have hunted the silver-backed bears, though not as a ranger. They are comparable to the snowbeasts- or perhaps a bit easier. However, the character I used depends on the shield defense a lot so your mileage may vary.

Oh good thread

So where do we go after gargoyles for skins/boxes?

Have Fun!

I've found a couple creatures that are good for both along the way, but typically I'll hunt up my weapons and hunt some portion on a skinnable creatures and some on box dropping ones. If you're really keen on one stop shop though, wiki search of beastiary can list them:

My Moon Mage box+skin progression starting with rock trolls:

-Rock Trolls
-... 5-10 rank gap here. I just went straight to snowbeasts and carefully overhunted.
-Snowbeasts north of gondola (there isn't anything great at this level, so I just used them to bridge the 5-10 ranks in defence needed for gargs and it allowed me to catch skinning up again)
-Snowbeasts/Gargoyles
-Atik'et/Westunyn (1st tier in the blasted plains. I honestly forget where in the progression I did these. Looking at the ranks on elanthipeda puts them here, so here they go.)
-Peccaries/Swamp Trolls + Snow Goblins (I would have passed on the peccs and trolls entirely, but guildfest was happening at the time and the better training goblins were just too far away for that to be practical, so I settled for the crappier hunting close to the fest. The three tiers of goblins means that you could probably just go to snow goblins right after gargoyles or atik'et or even instead of either of them.)
-Giant Blight Ogres
-Leucros/Forest Geni (There's so few leucs in the geni area that I always spent 5-10 minutes in leucs just training skinning before settling in to geni to train everything else)
-Adan'f Warrior/Adan'f Shadow Mage

I am nearly done with Adan'f now and will be moving to germish once I have enough weapon skill to be able to hit them reliably.

1st and 2nd tier snow goblins were fantastic once you get up that high, but 3rd tier had really low spawn for me.

My favorite area has been Rossmans Landing. Orc scouts to orc bandits to orc reivers (all spawn along with skinnable creatures), then orc raiders and a quick jog over to gryphons for skinning. I stayed in raiders until I could handle shalswars/zealots/sentinels, which I'm maxing out now.

I'll probably do malchata -> sky giants and then I'm not sure.
