"One final paragraph of advice: Do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am ? a reluctant enthusiast?a part time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it?s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, encounter the grizz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much: I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound people [mages] with their hearts in a safe deposit box [immortalized name] and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators [vault book]. I promise you this: you will outlive the bastards."

-- Edward Abbey

An excellent paragraph of what is to me, ranger mentality.

Here's a site which is accurate in their findings of wilderness survival, and meticulous recordings of field studies and observations. The current link is for tracking and wilderness quizzes made by Brian Booth.

There's also a good listing of trap types and what goes into making traps, if anyone is keeping that alive.

SAERIS, thank you for this.Very nice post. That captures the essence of a true old school Dragon Realms Ranger. I've been having some issues with my roleplaying a Ranger in a militia group lately and you just helped me make a great decision about what to do. Thanks!

Glad you liked it! One of the best, and my favorite enviro books is one that Ed wrote about his time spent as ranger in Utah, Desert Solitaire. Deals more with the survival on the terrain then the enviro-warriors adventures of some of his other novels.
