Maybe someone has already asked this and I missed it.
I was curious if conviction was meant to only train when you are hunting at skill level...I was back training weapons and when I would SMITE with them it did not appear to train conviction. Is this on purpose? It seems like conviction should be like melee or missile mastery if I am using SMITE with a weapon it seems like conviction should move otherwise only learning once per minute is going to take a long time to get ranks.

Yes, it is calculated as if your Conviction itself is a weapon skill or an armor skill, so back-training too low won't move it.

Melee/missile mastery is a bad comparison, those are unique skills. Other combat or quasi-combat ski;;s function the same way: stealth, debilitation, tactics, Backstab, Barbarian expertise, even appraisal (if you're learning via critter appraise) will eventually hard cap and you will be unable to learn from lower critters.
