Just an update 08/17/2003 10:07 PM CDT
Just want to let you know that I'll be going through a rather big RL move at the end of the month. I've been spending the past month packing and preparing, but crunch time is coming. The place I'm moving to has stone-age connection speed with no possibility of getting DSL or cable...that is just unacceptable to me :-)

So I'm curious, anyone out there use wireless, satellite, or something else? What are your thoughts on it/them?

Maece,

Being the techno geek.... i'll put my two cents into this.

SATELLITE SUCKS overall. Its not bad for downloading, but your relegated to upsteam of 56k. This proves to be a problem cause you have to send a signal to the provider at 56k to then allow you to download. Though i think you can survive.

The best thing is to see if your new community are doing some sort of WiFi network. It wont be super fast, but you might hit 1mbp. Which isnt that bad. Just make sure they use secure packet encryption so you dont have your personal info (e.g. credit cards) floating through the air where someone can easily use a packet sniffer to recombine it.

All in all i think your in a situation where you dont have much of a choice. You may need to buckle down and take the direct tv satelite route. WiFi networks takes alot of patiences at times to deal with. And you'll be depending on a community of hopefully VERY good techie geeks. The option with direct tv satellite is that you have someone to complain to when things dont work.

Its unfortunate that you have limited options. And I have tried it all. I love my cable modem from optimum online. Only company i know that i can hit 10 mbps download and occassionally if i dont over do it, do 1.5 mbps upload. No download limit and only 50 a month. The clincher is that you gotta be in my neighborhood. Who'd wanna be this close to me right =D.

i'd like to make an addendum, it seems that direct tv does have full capabilties for upstream and downstream.... but i have to find out a bit more info for this "high speed" satelite.

reading up on satellite broadband and its mega expensive.

some are like 600 for equipment and setup and like 100 a month

ok after reading more on satellite stuff yes i can read and search pretty fast judging by the timing of the post.

https://register.earthlink.net/cgi-bin/wsisa.dll/broadband/satellite/pricing.html?drn=1c2ad85daa645506add0b72fb9ca9e6c

check earthlink out. I checked out alot of different services. And having dealt with earthlink/mindspring in the past. And knowing they are a big company. Your prolly gonna get good-decent pricing. But not have to worry about them shutting you down for no reason. I'll keep an eye out on the alternatives, perhaps hit the slashdot archives.

Don't get a satellite connection.

There's a lot of packet loss and it's very weather-dependent.

very true... but 56k or rather 39k sustained is not an option. However, with the pricing ..... who knows. Thats 1800 for the first year for internet access. Personally I would have avoided moving to a place that lacked broadband. During this blackout, i saw how addicted to the internet I am. Its my heroine. I couldnt hit slashdot, or userfriendly, or refresh for anime.mircx.com and download more anime =(.

Hey, 56k isn't bad.

I did use a dial-up connection from Brazil with a 33k modem to play DR for six months or something like that.

It's not that bad, just don't expect to download stuff while you play. Either one or the other.

Phanton,

its totally about being spoiled from broadband =). I've been on broadband now for almost 6 years. I CANT go back. Well if forced I would of course. But the preferable option of course is not. I'd go to great lengths to avoid it. When I was planning on moving ( cant not since economy sucks so bad and money saved is much better saved when its rent free in my parents home , <3 to mom) I actually checked with telcos and cable service to see how the broadband situation was first, before i checked crime, taxes. Hehe, like i said before totally addicted. I need my slashdot.org and nytimes.com. Hard copy sucks =).

That's another reason. Equipment prices = stupid-high. That's a technical term.

Phone lines worked here fine. Laptop batteries did too. :)

When at home my connection refuses to go over 28k on the line I have for online stuff.

At college, I got a wireless T2 connection. I live for that. Best thing ever.

When things work best, 250-275kbs+. Most of the time I get 50-100kbs, though. The best part of it is that the entire plaza the buildings surround is also connected to the wireless lan. So you can be outside and such.. and surf the next.. on your expensive laptop.. in the ghetto..

Hrm.

The downside is the sub-level rooms can't get the signal and when its poor weather outside, things get fudged up. The college is smart enough to keep the entire place wired as a backup.

Just thought I'd mention something about WiFi if anyone was looking into it, I suggest that you also verify security. Reason is I had read an article in the local newspaper concerning major security flaws. Some computer Hobbyist had driven through areas using a laptop and a reciever, to inform him of any wireless networks around.

In short he fell upon many including one that was the backbone of a home business that was currently running accounting software, to think what he could have done.

I keep DR and the internet on a separate computer, since the last thing I need is to loose all my autocad files which represent years of hard work. Maybe I'm just a security nut, but to me it's better safer than sorry and I would rather assume the worst and protect myself in accordance.

your referring to war chalking. Most wireless communities will use linux. 128 bit wep encryption, mac address filtering, and a bunch of other things to keep your connection secure, and unwanted use of bandwidth. However, they are radio waves, and anyone can reconstruct it. But it would be a bit hard to reconstruct it,with that much traffic. And the encryption will make it so only the truely dedicated will try to hack you.

If dont properly, you wont have to worry about much.

And yes i have war chalked before. My store war chalks. My WiFi is open to all. I just set the upstream to like NOTHING, and closed down all ports cept for aim and webserver ports. So you cant quite download unless its from the web, or send emails unless its web-based.
