In the article I read about holy weapons it stated that the weapon needed to be mundane in order to be made holy. Would an altered, forged weapon be considered mundane for this purpose?

Yes, they can. Weapons with special "scripts" attached to them, such a gore weapons or other special items will not work. Bastard swords are ok.

Like Glemm said, I had no problem holy-fying my altered bastard sword; however, IIRC, if you are going for an alteration, you need to make sure to do it before you complete the quest - I think it is difficult to alter after the fact.
I may be wrong on that though

That is what I was always told and what I did, so I believe you are correct. Probably a really old post I read that cannot be looked up now.
