>>I remember a post way back listing the weapon types and ranged wasnt 1 of them. Besides, the bow wont be touching the critters it will be the bolts.
Well I made my DSX my holy weapon so hopefully it works(granted it wont matter much if I can't figure out where the recharge site is.
I thought it'd be really neat to have a ranged holy weapon with the changes to RW coming up(with the ranged skill increase and whatever).
If it doesn't end up working out though, that'll probably be pretty lame.
>>When your praying to Chadatru make sure you use pray chadatru. I've noticed that pray chad doesnt work for me.
I guess I really have no clue how to recharge my holy weapon, I thought it was just 'trace renew <weapon>' while you were at a recharge site? What is this 'pray chadatru' you speak of?

Well, the crossbow still works normally when hunting non-evil/undead things, but I dont think there is even any undead stuff on Riss/Kresh to test it on.
I'll give it a shot when I come to Xing and post my results then.

Based on the fact that you have to bless arrows instead of bows, I would assume the holy weapon thing will not work properly with your crossbow.

The shard version:
[Tower of Honor, Chapel]
An exquisitely carved ivory statue is the centerpiece of this small chapel. Representing Chadatru, the traditionally honored god of Paladins, the statue dominates the area with its presence. Brilliantly colored stained glass windows cast multihued shadows over the wooden pews radiating outward from Chadatru's icon.
Obvious exits: out.
>trace renew sword
You are not properly prepared to use this glyph.
>pray chadatru
Your hands should be empty first.
>stow sword
You put your sword in your spidersilk backpack.
>pray chadatru
As you kneel down to pray, you feel your head is not cleared enough to pay proper respect to Chadatru.
several minutes later
>
After clearing your thoughts, you pray deeply toward Chadatru. A warm, soothing sensation washes over your soul.
>get sword from backp
You get a jade-inlaid bastard sword with a golden dragon head guard and pommel from inside your spidersilk backpack.
>trace renew sword
You trace the Glyph of Renew upon your bastard sword causing it to glow intensely white.
>look sword
Your sword is shining with holy power.
Have to pray in a working recharge point before you can use the renew glyph.
Funny how the repair shops wont take things they cant fix but the holy weapon altar seems to take anything. Guess the repair shops are more important that holy weapons. I'd set it up so you had to show your weapon to the guild leader when you start the quest so your not stuck with a problem later. Even just the guildleader telling you what types work and dont would be a vast improvement. Guess adding a paragraph of text is too much work.
I had a weapon that couldnt be a holy weapon Took 6 weeks and me assisting every time i logged in to get fixed. Thank goodness Nehros finally showed up or id probably still be waiting. Did meet a bunch of GMs but Nehros was the only one that actually knew about paladins and holy weapons. Minority guild and one of those obscure things and all. Best they could do for me was telling me to assist every time i logged in and checking to see if Nehros was around.
I think your hosed. I think it wont work and your stuck waiting for a GM to fix it. Maece never told me Id need to change weapons so I wasted weeks waiting for her instead of finding another weapon. I dont want that happening to you so start thinking about a replacement weapon now.
I hope im wrong but good luck finding Nehros if im not.

Yea, my HX definately doesn't work as a HW. I was able to charge the weapon, it just didn't do anything special when I attacked an undead.
I'm not sure it really matters, it doesn't sound like anybody actually uses their holy weapon, maybe I wouldn't have either, but hey at least it might have been cool if it did work.
Maybe we could get a GM to fix the quest so it isn't so buggy, and to make it so you couldn't put stuff on the altar that doesn't actually work as a HW(the last part of the quest).
Its hard not to be cynical.

I was wondering, what does the holy part of the holy weapon do? Increase damage I know, does it also increase accuracy at all? Also, for the damage increase, is it equal, lesser, or greater than a cleric's bless?

Holiness trumps bless, the higher your circle and charisma the more this becomes evident. I've been meaning to do some testing over in plat, maybe I can provide some numbers "soon".
For the record, I've only run out of charges once, and that was when I was trying to run out of charges. I find the thing massively useful.

To clarify with the icon. It will recharge to about half or so of the full power potential and that is the cap. Using the icon again does not give more holiness to the weapon. I get a larger charge at an altar. Also, if you use your icon when your weapon has a full charge, you loose holiness back down to the icon's cap. I hope that is more clear.
I too find my Holy Weapon useful. Even if you have to take a long trip once in a while to recharge it (only had Shard or that island whose name I forget but starts with 'M' once upon a time) if used for emergencies such as invasions, it will last for a couple of them unless it is a really long one.

Half charge is still far better then going far to get a full charge. At decent circles the number of charges is enough that half is still very good. If I had an icon I would certainly use my holy weapon 20 times more then I do now.
Of course being able to do renew without an altar or icon would be ideal, or simply making holiness permanent. But I accept we have to have a downside to our HW and the GMs are not going to give us an "I win" button sort of thing. THe present situation is silly though and dates back to the guild vs guild days when Raph implemented HW, its the only way the cleric guild would allow it. We are long past those days and the holy icons were introduced to fix the HW limitations. Are the perfect? Perhaps not, but they are something, they are coded and they are ready, yet the vast majority of us have been waiting years for them. If the holdup is someone needs to code some guess the syntax quest for it? Fine. I would really like to hear from current GMs what the plan is though, perhaps the icon route is being abandoned? Perhaps they want to do something other then a quest to give us icons? It would certainly be nice to hear that something or anything is being considered. Since HW first came out this has been my number one issue, I personally feel HW should be our major perk and be usable as such, Raph had a great idea when he implemented it but it was nerfed by things irrelevent today, lets make it was it was intended to be then.

Clerics also have a commune (Kertigen's) that blesses weapons.. I'd be curious to know how that compares to holy weapons. It also improves with skill (3 strikes on weapon/circle), and I know it's stronger than regular bless.
For me, it's just a quick and dirty way to throw a bunch of strikes on a weapon when bless runs out and I don't have time to prep bless at the higher end, but if I were to find that it's significantly stronger, I might use the commune more often.

There are plenty of downsides. Only really useful against undead, can't use it at all against other players (oops, i accidentally pulled the wrong sword out when that thief attacked me, and now my soul is melted kinda thing).
>Have the GM's said that charges are here to stay, little/no chance of changing that? If they haven't what about tying it to our soul state, like brawling does. If your soul state is pristine, top end like brawling requires, then your weapon is holy, or you can trace the renewal glyph, but don't need to be at a "special" location. Possibly, if another balance is required, make it so that some down time is needed. Keep the 5 minutes of meditaion for example, just make it so you can do it anywhere. Just a couple questions and ideas, what do you guys think?
I like the idea of HW power being tied to soul like brawling is. If that won't fly, I like the idea of Glyph of Refresh being usable anytime, anywhere. Give it a soul cost comparable to light (and then lower light's cost, because it is way too high).

A few things...
Charisma and Circle have the biggest effects on Holy weapon... and Holy weapon is a "Bless-like" bonus... but also effects ANY type of opponent...
There are levels of soul that allow for Holy weapon to be as strong as the strongest type of bless... maybe more.
You can exceed 500 strikes with your holy weapon per charge eventually if you choose to train Charisma.
You can use your Holy weapon against ANY opponent... even in PvP.
Holy weapon ties into Footman's strike.
Holy weapon is bonded to you and noone can steal it from you. (except certain special creatures)
You can even change your Holy weapon although it will destroy the previous.
All of this for what? making it to 50th and succeeding in a quest... good deal I say.
Oh and you gain soul for preparing to use the glyph of renewal.

Is that something that was changed at some point? I had always heard that they couldn't be used against players. Guess I'll do the quest at some point. I still would like to see either
a) no charges, with holiness tied into your soulstate
or
b) Glyph of Renew usable anytime anywhere and simply burn up a certain amount of soul juice.

From the quest text
Sttiejal smiles and adds, "Your weapon will grow with you so be careful with it and be vigilant with it. You and it will be a force to be reckoned with. However, do not use it with a darkened soul or against another person. You shall pay gravely if you do."
I guess the messaging hasn't been changed to reflect the new state, hence confusion for me, since I just recently did the quest.

Did the quest at 50, enjoyed it until I got owned at the end. Came back around 56 and finished it, it was still a challenge, but was fun none the less. I liked the character rp of having the holy weapon regardless of the difficulty of recharing it. That being said. I agree with other posters. Make it holy like brawling no strikes. If that's not possible, make more recharge sites, one in every city. This might be useful if the new stamina changes will be what I think they'll be and you won't be able to use up all of your strikes in one combat sitting.

I had a 2HE CJ and I THINK maybe a prediction on... Shield? And I survived fine and dandy at 50. Of course, I also trained a lot of other skills for TDPs, so had, I think, reasonably good stats for my circle at the time. I do think an extra couple circles worth of training wouldn't have been bad to have though. Wouldn't have needed the CJ or prediction. I do know I over prepared. I heard about hordes of undead, making sure I had blessed weapons.... Yeah, I brought 4 blessed weapons AND made sure I had high enough soul for blessed brawling just to make sure. Didn't even wear out the first blessed weapon :)

Holy Weapon Questions

Nearly fifty now and about to embark on my holy weapon quest, but before I did I wanted to ask a few quick and noobish questions.
1) Can you use a bastard sword as a holy weapon?
2) Can you use an altered weapon as your holy weapon or alter your holy weapon?
3) Is there any way to change your holy weapon? (i.e make another weapon holy instead after you've already 'imbued' one)
That's about all of them. Thanks

Yes, it has blessings on it without needing to visit a cleric. It also hits a tad harder than normal if I'm not correct. And it looks cool when it hits.

It's worth noting that doing this will destroy your original holy weapon. I haven't done the quest so I don't know anything beyond that.
>>Thanks much! One last question, not sure if it's a spoiler or whatnot, but what does a holy weapon 'do'
Yes, it has blessings on it without needing to visit a cleric. It also hits a tad harder than normal if I'm not correct. And it looks cool when it hits.
>>< You step backward and then slice at a fledgeling forest gryphon. A fledgeling forest gryphon attempts to dodge. The broadsword explodes in a radiant shower of silver sparks and lands an apocalyptic strike (22/22) (So that's what it felt like when Grazhir shattered!) that rips through muscle and organs, cutting the foe cleanly in half.
>>A fledgeling forest gryphon collapses into a lifeless mound of fur and feathers.

< You slice a gleaming triple-fullered bastard sword with golden lion quillons at an amalgamated fleshreaper. An amalgamated fleshreaper fails to evade. The sword suddenly cries out "Justice!" as it flares white hot and lands a hard hit that detonates the fleshreaper chest into a shower of splintered ribs.
Shards of bone fly in all directions as an amalgamated fleshreaper crashes to the ground, shattering into a heap of twisted death.

<<The sword suddenly cries out "Justice!">>
is that supposed to be cool, because I really don't see how it is
if it roared or something that would be a little better, I guess
but really, the sword talking
why
who was eating peyote buttons when they came up with this

You don't eat peyote buttons when you play? You're doing it wrong.

Thank you all for the info. I did happen to come across one or two more questions though.
First off, is combat going to be involved in the quest? I'm not looking for any vivid details of level or difficulty or anything of that nature. Just wondering if I should bring some armour and defluff and such (If this is a PAFO thing and no one is compelled to answer I completely understand).
Secondly, I've been doing some reading on the recharge/renew glyph it's self and it seems to take a healthy amount of soul pool to get a robust 'charge' on your weapon. I currently have 25 Charisma and 25 Discipline at 44 and was going to shoot for 28ish or so Charisma and 26ish Discipline, should I aim a bit higher and if so what kind of ballpark? I'm not really looking for a substantial charge timer on it as I plan to stay in Ilithi for quite some time, but want to at least be able to lock more than weapons OR armour before I have to run back to the recharge site.
Thanks again in advance for all the help.

IMO, wait until 60th to do the quest. 50th can be kind of harsh from what I understand.

I believe all of these comments have been mentioned before...
With renew/praying to Chadatru being possible now once every RL hour... the limted charges are much less limited. Charisma and circle weigh in on amount of charges granted as well as power level of the effect... soul state matters too... donno how much for each.
You can use any weapon that doesn't have any special(beyond swap) verbs tied to it already or isn't in itself a "special" weapon. Example: ice blades and mirror weapons and gore weapons. I have heard a gore weapon being able to be holy if gorifi-ed before holified... but can't recall where.
Forged weapons can be made holy... but we were told that if something happened and you lost your holy weapons... and it was decided that "yes indeed it was Simu's fault you lost your weapon" that it would be replaced with a storebought version do to issues with the uniqueness of forged weapons.
Swappables utilizing the verb SWAP are holy in both modes.
Weapon straps don't play nice with Holy weapon. Problems can arrise. Take it easy on GMs and try to avoid tying and untying.
thrown and thrown/swap work as holy.
As of last reported by a ranged weapon holy weapon wielder... The holy effect does not extend to the ammo fired, and therefor makes ranged holy weapons useless for offensive attacks beyond the normal you would have done.
I am unsure whether or not holy weapons will lodge... if they do... that's an easy way
to lose your holy weapon and I don't recomend you try stabbing yours into something that can disapeer... taking the weapon with it. Also consider the construction of your holy weapon... a flimsy blade is a blade prone to breakage.
Currently it is policy that if you lose your holy weapon... you're done. No more holy weapon. Luckily, Paladins don't drop what is in their hands upon death... and if a held item is dropped prior to death it often is drawn back into the Paladin's hand if they self ward/bond upon death. It is possible to get your arm cut off and survive and not notice you left your weapon behind... Be very mindful and alert when using your weapon.
Holy weapon increases both your chance to hit and striking force against undead, both coporeal and non-coporeal. I am not certain how it is effected by "evil" types. Anything you attack will be struck with the visible effect of the holy weapon.(Even other Paladins)
Holy weapons interact with one spell in our arsenal that I am aware of... I do not know if any of our other abilities benefit from our holy weapon being wielded. Actually, I believe that I have noted increases in the power level of the wepaon when smiting. not sure though... its difficult to put yourself in certain ranges of soul-state to test it.
Holy weapons can never be handed(given) to another person... nor can they be picked up by anyone else... even if consented to do so. Most interactions by the non-owner result in the person being stunned.
sure there's more. but that hits on a lot of it.

You can register items like that now at the Crossing Town Hall so they can be more easily replaced. I really highly suggest doing that if you have any item that you would cry a little bit if you lost.
