Should I be concerned about my mace being pilfered from my backpack?

Of course it could make for a tad bit of comedy...

thieves will only steal your gems or coins, not your weapons you have in your backpack.

the one exception to this is graverobbers. Always try to get a glyph if you depart, or a raise if a cleric is available, should your character die <sooner or later its inevitable>.

The first thing you should learn is your way around the various towns where you are - so if you do end up departing, you can get quickly back to your grave. Additionally, there is an NPC at the crossing temple in the building where you go in the gate, that gives "free" tours of the favor area. I highly recommend.
