General newb MM questions 07/18/2012 09:01 PM CDT
I've just came back to the realms, and have started a moon mage. I can't for the life of me, seem to get Primary/Lunar and harness to go above 4/34. Arcana seems to be even worse, usually I'm stuck at 2/34. Any suggestions how to move these better? I've tried "in combat", but it seems to just be the same. I try to cast PG, FM (my higher tier spells) at max cost, which moves it up to those levels, but nothing higher. And, I run out of mana fast doing this.

Here's my magics:
Lunar Magic: 58 85% dabbling (1/34) Harness Ability: 58 13% dabbling (1/34)
Power Perceive: 64 10% intrigued (16/34) Arcana: 41 65% clear (0/34)
Targeted Magic: 27 17% absorbing (15/34)

Total Ranks Displayed: 248

Spells:
>spells
You recall the spells you have learned from your training.

In the chapter entitled "Perception," you have notes on the Clear Vision [cv] and Piercing Gaze [pg] spells.

In the chapter entitled "Psychic Projection," you have notes on the Hypnotize [calm] and Mental Blast [mb] spells.

In the chapter entitled "Moonlight Manipulation," you have notes on the Shadows, Focus Moonbeam [fm], and Refractive Field [rf] spells.

In the chapter entitled "Transduction," you have notes on the Burn spell.

plus bolt and ease of course.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

My memory of that level is a little fuzzy, but here is the basic formula for training PM:

You want to be casting quickly enough to challenge yourself (i.e. never wait for full prep), but at low enough mana that you aren't spending a lot of time waiting around for mana.

Try prepping Shadows at 10, charge 3, focus, cast. Play around with the numbers so that you're just barely not backfiring but not wasting mana either. Psychic Shield is supposed to be a good trainer so you might want to pick it up, though I don't know if it works that well at your level (might need to wait a bit).

If possible, sit around shadowlings or Bards playing Naga's Blessing (both will regen your mana faster).

There's not much to change about this routine in combat until you can get PD. Get it as soon as possible and snap cast it for great PM/HA learning.

There are far more knowledgeable people who usually read this thread, so listen to them instead of me if someone else replies. I can only tell you what has worked well with my little moon mage: low preps and repetition.

Cast easy spells at fewer mana but do that over and over. It avoids the constantly-running-out-of-mana issue, thus you get more experience. That strategy seems to work pretty well for my moon mage with these skills:

Lunar Magic: 77 43% cogitating (24/34)
Harness Ability: 79 68% very riveted (29/34)
Power Perceive: 85 81% engaged (22/34)
Arcana: 59 13% very engaged (23/34)
Targeted Magic: 39 47% clear (0/34)

I prep a spell, charge some cambrinth with a few mana, focus the camb, and cast--then repeat. I cycle through EASE, CV, PG, and Shadows -- all at low preps with low charges. All of my magic learning so far comes from just these four spells plus BOLT in combat. Those are the only spells I have so far (and 6 empty spell slots because I haven't needed any other spells yet and was feeling indecisive about what to choose.)

For targeted magic, I took some advice I read somewhere else and set up this macro:

prep bolt\r target\r cast\r

I toss a few energy bolts in the mix while I'm fighting with weapons, and I can keep targeted magic moving steadily while working all my other combat skills.

I just did some tweaking to what I use for learning PM myself, albeit at more like the 500 PM range.

What I use is a script to prep a spell at X mana level, charge an armband with Y mana (5 seconds), focus it (another 5 seconds), and then pause for 8 seconds (about the time to fully prep). I then run the script a few times, stopping it if I cast 10 times in a row without backfiring. If I get them all off, then I cut the timer by 1 second and restart it. Currently I use 'col 20', 12 mana in the armband, and an extra pause 3 seconds. At 2 seconds I was backfiring them all, at 3 seconds I don't backfire once.

I should also say, my script locks PP first before doing casting because it's very quick to do so, we're supposed to be the masters of PP, and more PP means you can throw around more mana faster. IIRC, when I had 50s magic, I had more like 100 PP than your 64. I know I had those kinds of numbers on my cleric who I trained a lot more recently than my MM, though I was pushing PP especially hard for a week or so while raising devotion as a novice before going into more regular training.
