...if more ranks in Astrology helps with astral travel, as in better directions or fewer encounters with the red-haired guy or other things?

Seems pretty random to me, I go a month or more sometimes, then others I die like 3 times in a week. Though it mostly has something to do with the amount of disruption.

I can't say for certain, but I am pretty sure that either Astrology or stats make a big difference. I haven't had an unfortunate encounter or become lost in ages (I would guess at least 1RL year). When I had a lot less Astrology skill it seemed to happen more frequently.

I'm pretty sure it affects the chance of blow up when entering or exiting the plane. As for inside the plane itself, Astrology would most obviously be related to the conditions of the plane itself. E.g. using PREDICT WEATHER lets us know how strong or weak the currents are. If the skill does anything it would be to mitigate any penalties caused by the conditions of the plane. That's just a guess, though. It might be involved more directly.

Thanks for all replies. Maybe Raesh will help us out if it's not too hush-hush.

Navigation is based on astrology, scholarship and attunement.

Recovery from the expanse is mostly luck though it's slightly influenced by stats.

Dodging streams is almost entirely held mana + concentration though stats play a minor role.

Pelag? Pelag don't care.

I want to say the GMs originally told us Wisdom was involved.

Yup. That's been documented for a while on the wiki page. I'll get this new info up soonish, but I'm taking a break from the wiki due to a marathon damage type edit and spending the last three hours or so chasing rats and killing arena monsters. My brain is fried.

So, I've done a quick edit including the above info, but came across a contradiction in the section about the environmental conditions within in the plane. One line says that distant and weak mana within the plane makes it harder to navigate and requires more skill, while another line says that stronger mana within the plane makes it harder to sense the directions. This seems contradictory, so what exactly do the conditions within the plane actually do?

Yeah, I'll confirm it's wisdom (I was likely the person who said that). I was being a little cagey about the stats in the contests since it isn't my system and Armifer wasn't available for me to ask.

I donno who originally said it was wisdom but Armifer did mention it in 2011. I gathered it wasn't actually checking wisdom until the skills 3.0 release.

My main MM has never gone into the Grey by going through the Ways by hand, not by script. Gotten Pelag'ed a couple times. Occasional death by running out of concentration. With over 1000 Astro I consider myself basically invulnerable in the Astral Plane. Can oftentimes go through it with no harnessed mana for a thrill. With fried nerves/head or limbs turned to ash from sorcerous backfires even to get back to Crossing.

Another MM, also 150+ but only going through the Ways by script, generally does alright except for getting tossed into the Grey every month or two, usually because of a lot of conduit ripples.

The best advice ever was 'To the best of your ability, try to make sure that the way you went is the way you came'. Even with over 1000 Astro/Attunement and 800+ Scholarship on the main one going by hand, I still often see directions screwed up and stay in the same place PERCing 2-3 times successively to get a multiple choice on where to go. It's most notable at the conduit endpoints, so often that to me I consider it a sign I'm only 1 room from a shard or the axis. I suspect it might have to do with the way the system works.

One thing I have my script do is before every move it will percieve until it gets two identical results in a row, then it will follow the indicated direction. It's worked very well.

As a PC I ran the Ways with a script all the time but I had ripples highlighted and would sit with my hand over the escape key to take over manually if it rippled (I was running Stormfront so I couldn't do anything interesting with matches to correct for them automatically).

This is my strategy as well. I've run the ways 3,114 times, and only been expansed once. I've also been eaten by Pelag 4 times. 3 of those times I'd made it back to Abiding first, but that doesn't stop him.
