TM and Mana 02/03/2016 04:41 PM CST
Could anyone explain what adding more mana to TM spells actually does? For a while DO was my only TM spell and I didn't notice any benefit to pumping additional mana into it. I heard the amount of mana in TKT affected how many shots you got, but when I picked it up later down the road (mid 20s circle-wise) I don't see any difference between a minimum prep and my personal cap (25). Is there any reason to cast higher than the minimum prep + 1?

All TM spells benefit by causing more damage with more mana. For most TM spells this is all that they gain. DO is like this, for example.

Some spells have a tiered effect based on mana where they gain additional effects the more mana you include. In the case of both TKT and TKS, this is gaining additional strikes the more mana you put into it. I don't know the exact levels it increases, but 25 mana gives the base two strikes and 50 mana gives the maximum 4 strikes. I.e. keep plugging and you'll get there.

That will disrupt about half your current attunement.
Turning your focus solemnly inward, you allow the configuration of the Telekinetic Throw spell to spread across your skin as a shadowy design of fractals and geometric abstractions.
You begin to weave mana lines into a target pattern around a misshapen germish'din.

(stuff)

Your formation of a targeting pattern around a misshapen germish'din has completed.

You gesture at a misshapen germish'din.
A wee ebony sliver suddenly swings from orbiting around your head and zips toward a misshapen germish'din!
The ebony sliver lands an extremely heavy (10/23) hit to its neck!
The ebony sliver explodes into even tinier multicolored fragments and vanishes!

The ebony sliver lands an extremely heavy (10/23) hit to its abdomen!
The ebony sliver explodes into even tinier multicolored fragments and vanishes!
A wee ebony sliver suddenly swings from orbiting around your head and zips toward a misshapen germish'din!
The ebony sliver lands a powerful (11/23) strike to its abdomen!
The ebony sliver explodes into even tinier multicolored fragments and vanishes!
A wee ebony sliver suddenly swings from orbiting around your head and zips toward a misshapen germish'din!
The ebony sliver lands a massive (12/23) strike to its back!
The ebony sliver explodes into even tinier multicolored fragments and vanishes!
A misshapen germish'din lets out a grating bellow as its fists unclench, then collapses into a massive heap of peeling flesh.

Roundtime: 1 sec.

Just to clarify, since I realised this might be misleading... those mana numbers are for TKT only. TKS increases with mana as well, but has different mana levels and strikes per creature.

To add to this, TM attacks are resolved like weapon attacks. When a weapon attack hits, it runs through a calculation using your stats, your accuracy, and the weapon's base damage (what you see when you appraise it). TM attacks work the same, but the base damage of the "weapon" increases with mana. So DO is like shooting an arrow, and more mana means you're shooting a better arrow.

Some quick testing shows that you're very close to getting a third strike.

On a completely random and unrelated note, how do you get the numbers in parenthesis to show? (Like when you struck it says (4/23))

It's a substitute used with the Genie client.
