hey folks
could someone give me a step-by-step on how to teleport?
i have been trying to figure it out based on the spell descriptions but am having no luck. my problem seems to be with moving my moonbeam. i can locate my friend but the beam will never shift to him.

Teleporting is as simple as "prep teleport/cast <moon>", but it sounds like you're asking how to shift a moonbeam. For that:
1. Prep Focus Moonbeam
2. Cast Focus Moonbeam <moon>
3. Prep Shift Moonbeam
4. Cast Shift Moonbeam
5. Prep Clear Vision
6. Cast Clear Vision
7. Prep Locate
8. Cast Locate <friend>
9. Gesture <moon> <friend>
10. Prep Teleport
11. Cast Teleport <moon>

If you're following Iliena's steps and it's still not working there could be a few reasons.
1. You aren't using enough mana for the range and your skill.
2. Your friend is simply out of range. The ability can only reach so far even with mana and skill.
3. Your friend is in a teleportation warded room or indoors. Moonbeams can only be shifted where there are no wards or they can see the sky.

i think i was getting step 9 wrong.
i'm really struggling to understand that zone map. i was trying to go from shard to crossing. all my magic skills are over 100. am i just trying to go to far?

Yes. Af far as I'm aware you can only shift a moonbeam to an adjacent zone no matter how much skill you have. If you want to go farther than that you have to manually place the beam yourself, or set a beam where you are and travel on foot/the ways and then you can teleport back.

Yup, that's too far to shift. With enough skill you'll be able to open a gate that far if you have a beam already set in some other way, but shifting to a person directly at that distance will be impossible.

Crossing (zone P) is two zones to the right (east) and 4 zones above (north) of Shard (zone W). Using the pythagorean theorum to calculate the direct distance between them results in 4 zones. (The square root of the sum of 2 squared plus 4 squared, rounded down.) If math isn't your thing you can count out the squares on the image a little ways below the actual map to find it. I.e. starting from the zero counting two squares right and 4 squares up ends up on a square with 4 in it, so that means it would be 4 zones away.

Ever since 3.0/3.1 it appears to be a 2 zone limit now. This means it's actually possible to shift to certain islands from certain spots on the mainland whereas it wasn't before.

Once you're able to use the astral plane it really opens up. You can have a moonbeam set pretty much anywhere within 5 minutes.
And once you hit circle 100 it gets even easier with being able to enter the plane from anywhere and other teleportation shortcuts.

Oh my dear Absolon, how you made me laugh :)
Its taken so long to reach circle 30 that the thought of reaching 100 is a completely foreign concept. I recently read a post showing the percentage of characters at each circle and there are so few that ever pass circle 50.
I recently retired and now have more time to spend on hobbies like DR. I look forward to seeing how long it takes to surpass circle 50.
And again I'd like to thank you for all your help. I see your posts all over these forums and applaud your willingness to share your knowledge with all of us who struggle to find our way in these challenging realms. :)

More skill will increase Teleport range to basically unlimited, same with Riftal Summons and Contingency. Moongate, however, does have a finite range even at high skill but you only notice it when trying to gate islands to mainland.
