Voice Range 10/20/2010 10:07 PM CDT
Currently, GM Raesh is working to expand the voice range system to non-Bards, but limiting it to one range for them.

This seems like something that would be perfect to link into the Shifting system, especially since he says he's already put hooks in on his side. He runs away screaming every time I suggest he do it.

So, anyone want to do it, please?

A soprano-singing male gor'tog ... I'm not sure Elanthia is really ready for that.

Besides the obvious gender shifting affecting vocal range, I'm at a loss to think of any other shifts that would affect vocal range.

What kind of things are you thinking of?

Shift allows you to twist people's bodies in "minor" ways. I don't think it would be a stretch to include minor alterations to vocal cords and lung capacity.

Double post!

I think it would probably have to be within racial ranges, though I could see an argument why not.

Especially given that the shifting system is already designed to consider different racial options (e.g. moonskin for rakash, tails for prydaen, allowed eye shapes for all the races, etc.).

The question I think that needs to be considered, is how does a vocal shift ability affect the bard perk of being able to shift their range at will. Does shift diminish this perk? I don't know because I haven't seen the new system yet, but I'm generally in favor of more shift options.

Probably something like SHIFT (target) VOICE (higher|lower).
It would be ammusing seeing some unnatural combinations. On the one end you'd have, like, a Gnome sounding like Barry White, and on the other you'd have Aaron Neville.

The one racial one that has always bugged me is Elves being tenors and counter-tenors. Since they're much taller than humans and coupled with their description as generally long and slender giving the impression that their necks would be long and slender as well, they would on average have much longer vocal chords which tend to produce lower, not higher pitches. I've always written it off as Elves having abnormally short vocal chords for their other-wise large and long physiology, but it would be nice to have it match up with 'normal' physical averages.

I can't wait for my Elf Bard to finally be a Baritone like he's supposed to be.

One data point: My elf went from being a countertenor to being a natural baritone.

Someone with an extra slot and time to kill could roll up multiple races with various names and random features to try and see what the ranges are for all the races. Unfortunately I don't qualify for either requirement at the moment. :/

Or a GM could just tell us... nudge nudge wink wink.
