shock, healing and the nature of empathy & thanatology 07/23/2012 09:06 AM CDT
I happened to be wandering about and "overheard" an NPC muttering, while on my necromancer character, and as that character ran out of town asap after failing to get any more information out of said NPC, and it raised certain questions in my mind, and as this thread had to do with the nature of empathy and shock, decided to do a bit of research.

According to Elanthepedia :

<<that every child born after whatever triggered this event was born with a small inherent degree of supernatural empathy. The vast majority of people instinctually suppress this empathy early in life and so suffer no ill effects from things like killing. Trained Empaths instead learn to remove this suppression instinct and develop that empathy instead. This reveals some insight to the nature of Empathic Shock - which is simply the sudden reflexive activation of this suppression under certain conditions. >>

based on this, perhaps Thanatology is learned by necromancers by "unsuppressing" this latent ability and linking, not with the living, but with the recently dead.

This same NPC, when asked by an Empath, also states that "while clerics take offense to the soulless undead, Empaths strive against the unlife which many undead possess."

There are two others which he refers to, which, by asking him with an Empath, gave the following responses-

"Salvur Siksa" "a little brown-noser he is, always agrees with what K'esharo says. I don't particularly like him, a bit too gruff fro my taste."

"K'eksharo" - "For one who is supposed to be in touch with the feelings of others, he shows a remarkable lack of empathy, and an enormous lack of foresight. Well, he's just a scared old man."

Does anyone know of any further information about these two individuals ?, as they are not listed on Elanthipedia.

The K' is actually the formal abbreviation of the Empath Title "Khalo". Khalos are the different forms of the leaders of the guild, check out the Elanthipedia page on Empaths for more information on the structure. You will also be able to find a description of Eksharo there but remove the K'. Eksharo is the Khalo rae Moda of Zoluren and having gotten to know Eksharo over the past few weeks, I would imagine the guy's crack about "remarkable lack of empathy" is more related to the characteristic of empathy rather than the skill itself (although Eksharo has now actually lost his empathic abilities). Eksharo is a rather stubborn and cranky guy.

>"Salvur Siksa"

No idea who this is.

There has been a LOT of discussion on thanatology vs empathy since the creation of the Necromancer guild and while there are many theories, the ones with the answers are not very forthcoming with them. My character has been on the war path trying to get them and has made herself rather unpopular with the Guild and Eksharo. If you're interested in hearing about it further from her point of view, stop by the Shard Visions Meeting on Thursday night as (OOC'ly) Asrea has been invited to discuss her stance on the moon mage vision of this issue.

Asrea's player already covered Eksharo, so I won't rehash that.

>>>"Salvur Siksa"

This guy has been around in plat, but not prime, yet. So you may have more luck asking player Empaths in Plat about him.

Also, Eksharo in Prime may not be quite the same as Eksharo in plat. He was a fairly large part of bringing down Lyras in Prime but I can't recall what role he played (if any) in Plat's version of that event.

He played the same roll in Plat. Nahida was the PC Empath he abused.
