Weddings and Such. 12/30/2007 10:43 AM CST
Greetings Everyone, I was just thinking to myself, I'm getting ready to hit 35th and have the ability to make the roses for weddings... But with those, I was thinking about coming up with a little wedding ritual sort of like in real life, but have a bit of DR flavor to it.

Does anyone have any rituals they do on a normal basis for weddings/divorces that I can get a few ideas from?

With the new pray, I like adding the appropriate diety as much as possible. Sometimes it's the immortal that the bride and groom follow while others I go for wedding appropriate gods (like Albreda).

Also I like blessing things. Holy water to sprinkle on the bride and groom. A volume of the Immortals. Things like that.

There is at least one book detailing wedding rituals for, if I am not mistaken, each of the main Elven Clans. There may be others.

For a divorce, you could perhaps have a paired item with knotwork that they wear and maybe have the couple attempt to cut it. These items could be designed to break, at which point the ceremony would be over.

Should they be regular items (ie, their rings) that mechanically can't be broken, maybe the couple could use ACT or other emote verbs to convey a failure to break what the gods have wrought. At this point, the cleric will step in and attempt to lop off the appropriate hand of the couple. This could be a symbolic single attack, or a continuous ordeal until the hand becomes a useless stump (best to have a couple empaths heart link or otherwise tend them as they bleed, and because you're probably going to have a divinely-wrought outcome maybe a supporting GM would magically make these and the scars go away). While bleeding, you'd incorporate the rose thing and the deed would be done. Maybe the ring/knotwork item could be spot-altered to have some sort of damage descriptor (blackened, severed, etc), allowing the couple to keep a reminder of what they lost.

Is there a god of marriage? If you play up to that, maybe the rings explode or the married couple gets struck down together in righteous anger.

J'Lo, I'm a ranger.. I'd believe anything.....

Another idea for a wedding might be to find one of those broken chains that are left when a gweth runs out of charges. You can mend the chain back together, symbolizing the union of the bride and groom.

I just stumble through the ritual, and offer a discount if they buy both roses at once.

More of a 'here's a rose, here's your bride, and it'll be 10 plat off if you buy the divorce now'.

Well thanks for the ideas everyone. I figure that the whole wedding thing is a good tool for roleplaying purposes, so why not come up with a normal ritual thats easily modified to cover any race or class with something interesting if need be.

If you're interested, there are a few books on S'kra wedding ceremonies, I believe. But the odds are, since you're not S'kra, you won't ever do one. Because anyone who RPs the race that hardcore wouldn't allow a non-S'kra to perform the ceremony.

Meant to post this earlier as well, sorry I forgot.
