Soul Attrition in PvP 01/27/2013 05:56 PM CST
So back when 3.0 was still in Test, we had quite the time testing out this lovely little spell known as Soul Attrition. It's a beautiful spell in concept, but in terms of power level I've never seen anything quite like it -- to a fault. To be honest, I don't think anything as powerful as this should be in the hands of a player.

I've included a log below of us outlining all of the issues we had with the Soul Attrition spell. I'm not sure if this spell was toned down or revised post 3.0 release into Prime, but I'm just re-bringing this up in case it has not been. I feel something this powerful would be disasterous in any form of competitive scenario(Wyvern Arena, CHALLENGE or otherwise), and grossly in the favor of any and all Cleric player characters who possess this spell.

Logs below! (The perspective is from the character Casserah)

Ricinus fades into view.
You wave.
Death Dealer Zandrith just arrived.
Ricinus says, "Ok, go for it."
Leilond bows to Ricinus.
Ricinus waves.
You say, "Thanks."
Leilond asks, "Which one do you want first? HORN or SA?"
You say, "Leilond is organizing my next death."
You nod to Zandrith.
Ricinus says, "SA I guess, I've got that spell up to look at."
Leilond asks, "Care to Soul Attrition Casserah's face off Zandrith?"
Leilond smiles.

Zandrith gestures at you.
You sense the arrival of a dark presence.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
The essences collide harmlessly with each other.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You wince in pain as Zandrith's aura nicks a small portion of your spirit away.
You are lightly stunned!

You are lightly stunned!

Your heart continues to pound as Leilond's infectious rage pulses
through your veins.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You grimace in silent pain as the essence collides, shearing a fair
portion of your spirit away.
You are severely stunned!

You sense the dark presence depart.
Your spirit feels less drained.

Ricinus says, "Hmm, might have to do with ROTC being stupid acting still."
Leilond asks, "Wha?"

You are healthy now! Get back to work!
You feel the weakness imparted by your recent death slowly fade away.

Zandrith asks, "Want me to try horn?"
Leilond asks, "Rage of the Clans?"
Leilond says, "He's not a Bard."
Leilond says, "And I don't have it up, and he's not in my group."
You say, "Well. You have SOMETHING cast, but it's not from ROTC."
You say, "Zan has always torn me apart with this."
Leilond says, "I have nothing cast."
You say, "Your heart continues to pound as Leilond's infectious rage
pulses through your veins."
You say, "I've been getting that all evening."
Ricinus says, "Casserah has ROTC effects still up and running."
Leilond says, "You're not even in my group."
You say, "But Zan tears me apart with this even when we're just us off alone."
Leilond says, "And that spell isn't on me."
Ricinus asks, "Did you have it up a few minutes ago?"
Leilond says, "I had it up a Looooong time ago."
Leilond says, "Like hours long."
Leilond says, "And logged out."
Leilond says, "And back in."

Besides yourself, current members of Leilond's group include:
No one!
You have left your group.

You give Leilond a playful poke in the ribs.
Ricinus says, "Well, I do know that spell is still acting weird."
You say, "It's not from ROTC though."
Ricinus says, "I haven't gotten around to fixing it better yet."
You say, "Zan has always killed me with this."
You say, "We were grouped, too, you ninny."
You give Leilond a playful poke in the ribs.
Leilond says, "Yeah, I bet you can reproduce right now."
Leilond says, "Since you're out of my group."
Leilond sticks his tongue out at you in a playfully teasing manner.
Zandrith says, "Yeah so basically they're saying Im a sissy and I
shouldnt be able to kill her."
Zandrith scowls.
You say, "I didn't say that."
You point at Leilond.
Leilond says, "If your HORN can't, no you shouldn't be able to pwn her
with Soul Attrition if it's also a Targeted spell."
Zandrith says, "Im not arguing the fact or anything."
Leilond says, "ESPECIALLY if it's cyclic."
Ricinus says, "Ok, I've removed the ROTC leftovers."
Leilond sticks his tongue out at Zandrith.
Ricinus asks, "See how things look now?"
Zandrith asks, "Which spell?"
Leilond exclaims, "Soul Attrition her face again!"
You say, "SA still."

Zandrith bows his head and chants a prayer.
Ricinus says, "Whichever."
Ricinus grins.

Zandrith gestures at you.
You sense the arrival of a dark presence.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You wince Zandrith's aura nicks a tiny portion of your spirit away.
You are barely stunned!

Leilond says to you, "All in the love of testing."

Your spirit feels less drained.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You shudder inwardly, your spirit chilling as Zandrith's aura shears a
moderate slice of it away.
You are knocked completely senseless!

Leilond winces.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
The essence shatters through your aura, tearing mercilessly at your
spirit. The pain grows to be too much to bear, and you crumple in
agony under the force of the onslaught.

Your spirit is weakened beyond its ability to sustain your body!

A soft red glow appears over your body.
Your death cry echoes in your brain as it quickly dawns on you that
you have just died! Already, you feel the tug of eternity upon your
soul and you struggle to remain tied to this world.

A chill takes the seat of your soul as your remaining spiritual
strength bleeds away steadily. However, you are comforted that you
have curried the favor of your god, which will greatly improve the
course of your resurrection or reincarnation.

Your body will decay beyond its ability to hold your soul in 10 minutes.
You sense the dark presence depart.

DEAD> You say, "So, I don't think it's ROTC..."
DEAD> You laugh, the sepulchral sound echoing through the room.

Leilond asks, "Now see how a fully targeted HORN does?"

You are healthy now! GET UP!
You feel the weakness imparted by your recent death slowly fade away.

Zandrith bows his head and chants a prayer.
Leilond says, "Be sure to HIDE first though cause Casserah has some
crazy auto-glyph hax going on."
You notice Zandrith slip into a hiding place.
You notice Zandrith focusing intently on you while remaining hidden!
Leilond asks, "Stand Casserah?"
You stand back up.

Zandrith reveals himself.
Zandrith makes a ruthless lashing gesture.
A mass of deep ebon ether erupts from thin air, coalescing into the
spectral form of a shadowy black unicorn which gallops rapidly toward
you.
Your arm buckles as the black unicorn whams its horn squarely on your
battle shield, but you are unfazed.

The unicorn dissolves into a billow of ghostly smoke and fades.

Leilond says, "Yeah, totally pales in comparison."
Zandrith says, "SA isnt blockable or dodgable though."
Leilond asks, "Soul Attrition is a DFA?"
You say, "DFA is dodgeable though..."
Leilond says, "Yeah, and DFA spells double count evasion now."
You say, "SA seems to be TM that goes purely against stats, somehow."
Ricinus says, "It does ignore shield from what I'm seeing."
Leilond says, "Dang."
Leilond says, "Cyclic DFA, that's pretty hardcore."
Zandrith bows his head and chants a prayer.
Zandrith begins to focus intently on you!
You trace the Glyph of Warding at Zandrith, whose attention wavers from you.
Ricinus grins.
You ask, "Should it be taking like 13-17% with 'tiny bits'?"
Zandrith says, "Blah I forgot."

Zandrith gestures at you.
Spidery tendrils of icy blue light swirl outward from Zandrith's
palms, darting toward you.
The writhing tendrils strike you benignly. You feel an unsettling
chill begin to cascade through your body as the lights billow into a
sheaf of ghostly fog around you.

The dense fog enwreathing you disperses into a fine, spectral mist.

Zandrith says, "I thought spirit spell werent blockable ever."
Zandrith says, "HE has never been blockable."
Leilond says, "HE is also only against Evil creatures I think."
Leilond says, "Or cursed."
Leilond says, "Undead/Cursed I think."
Zandrith says, "I just assumed all targetted spirit spells worked that way."

Zandrith bows his head and chants a prayer.
Leilond says, "Nah, Abandoned Hearts can be blocked I believe."
You notice Zandrith slip into a hiding place.
Leilond says, "Or at least, I don't believe it's DFA."
Leilond says, "And that directly attacks Spirit."
You notice Zandrith focusing intently on you while remaining hidden!
Ricinus says, "I'm pretty sure CHS doesn't ignore shield."

Zandrith reveals himself.
Zandrith gestures at you.
Spidery tendrils of icy blue light swirl outward from Zandrith's

The writhing tendrils strike you benignly. You feel an unsettling
chill begin to cascade through your body as the lights billow into a

The dense fog enwreathing you disperses into a fine, spectral mist.

Ricinus says, "I'm trying to figure out how SA scales spirit damage right now."
You nod to Ricinus.
Leilond says, "Thanks for taking a look."
Zandrith asks, "Maybe its because SA hurts me too?"
Zandrith says, "I was doen to 40% spirit."
Zandrith says, "Err down."
You say, "But it doesn't really seem, well, remotely sane that the
target really can't even get away."
Zandrith says, "Ooh yeah show em what happens when you run away."
You say, "When we've tested it before, YOU had to leave so I wouldn't
die because I kept getting chain-stunned."
Zandrith chuckles.
You say, "Nothing happens..."
You snort, loudly.
Zandrith says, "When I left it stopped."
Zandrith says, "When you left you still died."
You ask, "Did you go far away?"
You peer quizzically at Zandrith.
You say, "I couldn't get more than a couple rooms with the stuns."
Zandrith says, "If i move even one room from where I cast it it ends."
Leilond asks, "So it keeps working even after you leave the room?"
Zandrith says, "When the effected leave the room it continues."
Leilond says, "Huh."
You say, "You mean the victim."
Zandrith says, "Watch."
Zandrith bows his head and chants a prayer.
Zandrith grins.
You say, "AS doesn't save me, but let me cast that first."

You gesture.
Your cambrinth armband emits a loud snap as it discharges all its
power to aid your spell.
A dull orange glow settles around you.

You say, "OK."
You are healthy now! Get back to work!
You feel the weakness imparted by your recent death slowly fade away.

[Northern Trade Road, Farmlands]
Rich farmland surrounds the road on both sides. The fresh scent of
the tilled soil rises all about you. Southward, the walls of a
fair-sized city rise near the banks of a glistening river. A faint
haze of smoke hovers over the town, blurring the outlines slightly.
To the north, distant hills rear up against the grey-blue horizon.
You also see a rusted dagger, a rusted dagger, an open crate, a stone
pile, an onager and some junk.
Also here: Death Dealer Zandrith, GameMaster Ricinus and Leilond.
Obvious paths: north, south.

Zandrith gestures at you.
You sense the arrival of a dark presence.

You go south.

[Northeast Wilds, Outside Northeast Gate]
You are before the Northeast Gate of the Crossing, surrounded by
wayfarers and adventurers also in mid-journey. Above, guardsmen stare
down from the thick stone wall that encloses the city, wary for
hostile visitors. Whether they travel to destinations in town or
farther west, or to the north and east, they all appear to be seeking
something beyond themselves.
You also see a sturdy mule-drawn wagon, Magical Feat Trainer Ozursus,
a crystal table with a crystal shard on it, a narrow footpath, the
Northeast Gate, a bucket of viscous gloop, a weathered roadsign and a
hurty thing.
Obvious paths: north, east, southeast.

You wince Zandrith's aura nicks a tiny portion of your spirit away.
You are barely stunned!

You shake off the stun!

You go east.
[Northeast Wilds, Bramble Thicket]
A small, thin path meanders through an otherwise daunting thicket of
brambles here. Directly to the north is a dark, slate outcropping,
while east lies a tall, attenuated tower. The exterior of the tower
is covered with carvings of fantastic and legendary beings and
creatures, whose awesome and powerful visages you can discern even
from this distance. Through the foliage, you see the town gate to the
west.
You also see an overgrown trail.
Obvious paths: west.

> go path
[Northeast Wilds, Bramble Thicket]
The bramble thicket is not very dense here, and its tangled, matted
shrubs seem to shrink back from the north side of the clearing, almost
as if shunning it. Just beyond the clearing rises a massive gate.
Sere vines and dead vermin are scattered about its base, but nothing,
not even moss, mars its surface.
You also see a small thin path.
Obvious paths: north.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You wince in pain as Zandrith's aura nicks a small portion of your spirit away.
You are lightly stunned!

You go north.
[Hilltop Cemetery, Lich Gate]
The ground beneath your feet is black and dead, as though it had once
been engulfed in a great inferno. Oddly enough, the Lich Gate before
you appears pristine and intact, unscathed by the apparent waste and
desolation that surround or perhaps radiate from it.
Obvious paths: south.

S> go gate
[Hilltop Cemetery, Inside Fence]
A cold breeze blows through the area changing its direction when you
turn, as if guided by some unseen force. Several paths lead off to
the north into the trees. Along the perimeter, a low wrought-iron
fence serves as a token boundary for the cemetery.
You also see the Lich Gate.
Obvious paths: north, northeast, northwest.

You go north.
[Hilltop Cemetery, Before Mausoleum]
The trees have given way to a mausoleum crafted from white marble.
The entrance is marked by two smooth columns and perched just above, a
solemn-looking stone gargoyle surveys the surroundings.
You also see a huge WARNING sign.
Obvious paths: north, east, south, west.

You are stunned!

You teeter and nearly fall over.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You shudder inwardly, your spirit chilling as Zandrith's aura shears a
moderate slice of it away.

You go north.
[Hilltop Cemetery, Winding Footpath]
Just beyond the iron fence that runs along the path to the southeast,
you hear something moving about in the underbrush. Faint pinpoints of
light fade in and out of the trees and you would swear the temperature
just dropped. The outline of a square structure lies to the south,
while a faint trail heads northwest through low-hanging trees.
You also see an imposing marble crypt.
Obvious paths: southeast, south, southwest, northwest.

go crypt
[Graveyard, Inside Crypt]
A low stone altar heaped with dried flowers, old rotted offerings of
food and streaked with ancient pools of melted wax, stands opposite
the heavy iron gateway which leads out of the crypt. The walls are
lined with closed graves, sealed with heavy marble facings, each
bearing a polished bronze plaque with the name of one of the departed.
A lone flickering candle standing atop the stone fights a precarious
battle against the heavy oppressive darkness of the crypt.
You also see a crack in the marble floor.
Obvious exits: out.

You say, "Eight rooms away, I think."
Leilond asks, "Did you die?"
You say, "And it still kept stunning me. I was in the crypt when I died."
You nod.
Ricinus says, "Ok, gotta get back to testing VoI."
You lightly tap Ricinus on the shoulder.
You flail your arms about.
Leilond says, "Yeah, that spell is going to be met with a river of tears."
You say, "But..."
Ricinus says, "Trying to get it pushed out here before I go to bed."
You ask, "What about this problem?"
Leilond says, "Cyclic, DFA, hits you wherever you go."
Leilond chuckles.
Leilond exclaims, "Thanks for stoppin by!"
You say, "I can't leave and escape his spell."
You say, "Eight rooms away and it was no different."
Ricinus says, "There doesn't appear to be anything horrible going wrong."
You say, "But if he leaves, even one room away, it stops."
Ricinus says, "It might need some balance."
Zandrith says, "Yeah its just cause Im awesome."
Zandrith preens. Someone's pleased with himself!
Ricinus says, "But nothing breaking."
You gaze off into the distance blankly.
Ricinus says, "That's how the spell works."
You say, "That's kind of broken..."
Ricinus says, "The target can run and it continues, if the caster
tries to run it stops."
You say, "You have no escape at all as the target."
Ricinus says, "Sure you do. Kill the caster."
You say, "You can't."
Ricinus grins.
Ricinus asks, "Why not?"
You say, "I get chain stunned from the first attack, basically.
Sometimes the second."
You say, "Even with anti stun, there's nothing I can do."
Ricinus asks, "Ahh, the stuns are too frequent?"
You say, "I can barely get away."
You nod.
You say, "Basically every attack is a stun."
Zandrith says, "Yeah like if leilond hits me with that spell he hit me
with earlier I dont even get a chance to try and run."
Leilond says, "It seems the "light hits" are creating some hefty stuns."
You lean on Zandrith.
You say, "Leilond outclasses both of us, like an 800 lb gorilla though."
You chortle softly at some secret joke.
You say, "I'm going to scroll up and record the messages."
Zandrith says, "When we used to have this spell if id have cast it on
him Id have died from it."
You say, "Eight pulses to kill me, but every single one stunned me."
You say, "That was the first time he cast it with you here."
Zandrith says, "As mjuch as I like it I agree that the stun thing
needs toned down."
You say, "The second one, it was eight again, with one having failed
entirely. So seven really."
Zandrith says, "Cause it doesnt stun me when it starts to hit my spirit."
You say, "And every success he gets stuns me."
Zandrith asks, "How much spirit health were you losing per hit?"
You say, "I recorded them to Leilond with the first set."
Zandrith says, "I was losing 2%."
Leilond says, "80% after the second attack, then 64%."
Leilond says, "Then 48%."
Leilond says, "Is what you told me."
You say, "The first attack the first time did nothing, then 80%, 64%,
48%, 38%, 23%, faded."
You say, "Second time 76, 63, 49, 32, 19, 22, 10."
Zandrith says, "Ok so Im assuming the stuns are from 10% or more spirit loss."
Leilond says, "And you can restore your spirit the entire time while
that's going on can't you."
Leilond grins at Zandrith.
You say, "The spell is just enormously open to abuse. I know you won't
do it, but there's nothing stopping it from being hugely abused
because an outclassed victim can't do anything but die."
Ricinus says, "Ok, I've got a cooldown on the stuns."
You say, "And you don't outclass me by much, if at all."
Zandrith asks, "Want me to try it again?"
You gaze at Ricinus.
Ricinus says, "Sure."
You ask, "But how are you going to make this spell not hugely abusable?"

Zandrith bows his head and chants a prayer.
You draw out your Dwarven greataxe from the weapon harness, gripping
it firmly in your right hand and balancing with your left.

You begin chanting a mantra to invoke the Anti-Stun spell.
You gesture.

You say, "Period."
You say, "I'd go closed/guarded or quit because there's no chance."
Zandrith asks, "Whats your spirit health at?"
You exclaim, "I was dead!"
Leilond asks, "How much spirit does it take from you each pulse Zandrith?"
Ricinus says, "Afk a few moments. It is looking a bit heavy handed."
Zandrith says, "I didnt pay attention that time."
Leilond nods to Zandrith.
Ricinus asks, "Less stuns now though, right?"
You nod to Ricinus.
You say, "Not that it helped."
You say, "I couldn't hit him at all and I can tear him apart usually."
You say, "I was constantly somewhat unbalanced to extremely."
You stand back up.
Ricinus says, "Uh."
Ricinus says, "I don't see any balance stuff in there."
You ask, "Maybe the spirit health issues unbalance?"
Leilond says, "It's because it attacks spirit."
Leilond grins.
You say, "I was using slice which should help balance."

Zandrith bows his head and chants a prayer.
You say, "There's also the somewhat minor problem of, because it saps
spirit entirely, it leaves the dead victim with 10 minutes to depart
instead of his/her normal time."
Ricinus says, "Ok, try again a few times, see if the balance thing
happens, I'll be outside a few minutes."
You nod.

You begin chanting a mantra to invoke the Anti-Stun spell.

Zandrith gestures.
A shaft of brilliant white light descends from the heavens, bathing
Zandrith in its radiance.
He appears to grow stronger.

Zandrith bows his head and chants a prayer.

You gesture.
You contribute your harnessed streams to increase the pattern's potential.
A dull orange glow settles around you.

You spin around to face Zandrith.
You are solidly balanced.
You feel fully rested.
You are healthy now! Get back to work!
You feel the weakness imparted by your recent death slowly fade away.

Zandrith gestures at you.
You sense the arrival of a dark presence.

< Moving with grace, you slice a massive Dwarven greataxe with a
bearded silversteel blade at Zandrith. Zandrith fails to dodge.
The greataxe lands a good strike (3/22) to Zandrith's right leg.
[You're nimbly balanced and have slight advantage.]
[Roundtime 5 sec.]

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You wince Zandrith's aura nicks a tiny portion of your spirit away.

You shake off the stun!

< Moving well, you slice a massive Dwarven greataxe with a bearded

excellent position.]

You say, "Very bad balance."

grey buckler.

[Roundtime 9 sec.]

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You wince in pain as Zandrith's aura nicks a small portion of your spirit away.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You wince in pain as Zandrith's aura nicks a small portion of your spirit away.

You say, "And a small part is like 17%."

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You grimace in silent pain as the essence collides, shearing a fair
portion of your spirit away.

You shake off the stun!
You feel fully rested.

You say, "Which is uh high for small.."

< You slice a massive Dwarven greataxe with a bearded silversteel
blade at Zandrith. Zandrith evades, barely leaning out of harm's
reach.
[You're cold, somewhat off balance with opponent in good position.]

Your spirit feels less drained.

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!

Zandrith's spirit lashes out at your own!
You suddenly double over, your body spasming in pain as a large slice
of your spirit is shorn away by the colliding essence.

You shake off the stun!

< Trying weakly, you slice a massive Dwarven greataxe with a bearded
silversteel blade at Zandrith. Zandrith dodges, barely twisting out
of harm's reach.
[You're winded, desolate, very badly balanced with opponent in
superior position.]
[Roundtime 8 sec.]

A light silvery glow surrounds your Dwarven greataxe and it stays in your hand.
The dull orange glow fades from you.

You are healthy now! GET UP!
You feel the weakness imparted by your recent death slowly fade away.
You stand back up.

You say, "It didn't get me to extremely, but I spent almost all of it
at somewhat off and very badly."
You say, "So, yeah. The victim has no chance."
You shrug.
Zandrith frowns.
Leilond says, "To be honest, Soul attacks are harsh enough. But the
fact that it's a soul attack, AND DFA, AND cyclic, AND keeps attacking
if the person leaves... is a bit much in terms of player balance, at
least IMO. In terms of balance, I'm not so sure it's fair to lump all
three, much less four together."
Zandrith says, "I love it but i have to agree."
You nod to Leilond.
Zandrith says, "Its not as overpowered as chill spirit used to be but
its still too much."
Zandrith says, "Shouldve seen chill spirit back in the day."
Leilond says, "You'd hear from it though, from the people who PvP. And
I know the game doesn't revolve around PvP but... In terms of power
level Soul Attrition right now blows every other offensive ability in
the game completely out of the water."
Zandrith says, "Much much much worse."
You say, "The game has to at least acknowledge PvP."
You say, "This is like the ultimate bullying spell."
Zandrith asks, "Whats you charisma, int, wis and disc?"
You say, "In that order, 44, 45, 40, 50."
You say, "I can go boost charisma again, but you still killed me
easily the last time I did."
Zandrith says, "Im at 54, 51,51,54."
You nod to Zandrith.
Ricinus says, "Well, it's looking heavy handed right now, but not
something I can fix right now."
Ricinus grins.
You say, "That's not the entire problem though, Zan."
Ricinus says, "Way past my bedtime."
Leilond nods to Ricinus.
Leilond says, "Appreciate you looking Ricinus."
You say, "You could go cast that on a bunch of circle 50 people just
to be a huge jerk adn they'd be helpless."
Zandrith says, "Thanks for looking into it."
Zandrith nods.
You say, "Thanks."
You nod to Ricinus.
Ricinus says, "Welcome, I'll get it scaled back a bit."
You say, "Thank you."
Leilond exclaims, "Righteous, night man!"
Leilond waves.
Ricinus waves.
Gem-like particles begin to swirl from Ricinus who quickly fades into
a sparkling cloud of tiny stars that float away, disappearing into the
sky.

You go north.
[Northern Trade Road, Farmlands]
The scent of freshly-tilled earth rises from the farms on both sides
of the road. Heavily-loaded wagons and carts brimming with produce
wend their way southward towards the walls of a city set near a
glimmering river. You note an amazing variety of races and types that
are driving their goods into the town.
Obvious paths: north, south.

Yeah, I mentioned this one early on in testing too. There's a couple major issues with it in addition to the fact that it seems to scale very poorly.

--Cyclical so cannot be dispelled.
--Cast-and-Forget. The attacker casts it on you and it will stick with you and kill you no matter how far you run. Note: this effect was expressly taken away from Mark of Arhat I believe because it was too OP.
--Given the balancing of physical damage in 3.0, it seems a bad departure to then go to spirit "attack" as a way of subverting that and killing quickly. I have 70 charisma and Hackett kills me in a couple pulses of this spell, beyond anything I saw from physical/regular TM attacks at the same stamina.

Couple questions that are related:

--Does spirit death still make rezz impossible?
--Is there a cap to how low your auto-depart time can be from spirit death?

Literally, the only defenses we found to this spell were to drag the caster to another room (avoid !drag kills that move) or Calm them. Sleep/stun/immobilize/run, doesn't matter, you're dead after it's cast.

You make Cleric TM domination sound like a bad thing. We only have your best interests in mind.....

When Zandrith was killing me with Soul Attrition, I was getting 10 minutes before I would have auto-departed. While more generous than I think 2.0 was, this still feels like a bad thing.

And to summarize the problem with what Ricinus said in the log Leilond posted, I had no chance of killing Zandrith, despite being able to normally. The constant grinding away of my spirit health tanked my balance with every pulse, making it next to impossible for me to even get light hits in.

Spirit death prevents rezz and/or spiteful.
Spirit death no longer affects depart time.

Ricinus has mentioned several times that he thinks the spirit spells are OP. I imagine they will be toned down soonish.

Only to add to this, while walking through a hunting area a Cleric had this spell going. I was in the room for about 20 seconds, likely two cyclicals pulsed in that time. I'm charisma secondary (50ish) and actually had Soldiers Prayer active. I will caveat that I do not know the level of the cleric but presumed they were training TM in there (Gryphons, which no longer teach me defenses (i use warklins for that now)). In any case, in the few seconds I was in there trying to ask them if they wanted to hunt together I went from 100% spirit to 50%.

Probably the best spell ever to have people not check if your AFK Scripting!

"In any case, in the few seconds I was in there trying to ask them if they wanted to hunt together I went from 100% spirit to 50%."

That spell is not an AOE, nor does it strictly use 'target'- I don't know how the Cleric could accidentally cast it on you, unless it is because of the wierd 'targetting' SA uses.

Is there a broader overhaul to spirit attacks that are in the works beyond this spell?

While I agree that SA is direly overpowered...

...Anyone who thought 2.0 Poach was fair, let alone actively used it in PvP, has no right to say even a word of complaint. Not pointing any fingers, it just seems hugely hypocritical.

uh... no? This isn't a game of every 5 years someone else gets an OP ability. Just because 1st strikes, 1 hit kills and arrows of amazing dewm were over powered for the last X years and people used them doesn't mean they lose the ability to point out when they see a pot the same shade of their kettle.

As a Cleric player, I look forward to spirit attacks being massively OP for a decade. Long live clerics.

Though I haven't done -extensive- testing with SA, I have to say that it seems to perform exactly as I would expect in at-level contests, while not making much headway when I overreach against larger targets.

I understand what you are saying but please understand that you are speaking to the Clerics guild- we had a history of when our spells were considered to be overpowered that they are shut down post haste, where there are the examples we all know of OP spells and abilities that existed for years.

I do not consider that any excuse for the brave new world of 3.0- OP abilities and spells should be brought in line. Just I understand the cynical point of view.

Killing yourself within a justice area using this spell grants you a resurrection-less death AND an arrest warrant for murder.. for murdering yourself. Just thought this should be brought up.

How do you kill yourself with soul attrition?
Reply
Re: Soul Attrition in PvP 02/05/2013 12:53 AM CST
HAving very low spirit health and using it on someone else.. basically.. the other person wins the attrition. I was trying to off myself to see what it was like to have a spirit death using Eylhaar's feast. That will stop at 0% but not kill you anymore, so I used soul attrition to finish myself off and I died, but as I said, got an murder warrant for it.
