Would it be possible to move the commune system to a simple 'commune X' instead of requiring all the...junk?

It's really obnoxious to "get incence get shark point shark at incense wave incense at character stow stow get basin sprinkle basin on character stow commune meraud". And that's after I spend, what, 10$ on an after-market lighter?

It makes sense for dirt, though I'd also argue that rewriting it to 'you scoop up a handful of (room appropriate material) and (watergo)' is better anyway.

Most/all other guilds don't have the ritual and baggage to deal with. It just adds something else to script, without really rewarding the players with anything interesting or fun.
