A Disturbing Lack of Candles in Zoluren 06/08/2015 05:09 PM CDT
Howdy all. I am a returning player taking advantage of a free account right now. I do eventually intend to have a DR budget that factors in certain things like passports once I've decided to stick around, but right now I'm only a day in and still getting a feel for things, and am not quite ready to throw money at the game yet.

I've encountered a tiny problem because of this. I really want to partake of the align mechanic and my character is eager to show her support of Eylhaar so I got her devotion high enough and made her way to consecrated ground. But woe! I was then prompted to have a candle for this ritual, and Brother Durantine doesn't stock them. According to the wiki, the closest place that does stock them is Riverhaven. Am I out of luck?

Is there any chance we can convince the good Brother to start keeping them in stock?

I'm not sure if candlemaking still works, but at one time you could make your own candles using a mold sold at the alchemist's shop in Crossing. Honeycomb for the wax can be foraged, although I don't recall its difficulty offhand.

Stocking candles in Zoluren seems like a great idea.

Until then:
It's probably easier for you to just ask someone to grab you a candle(s) from Riverhaven.

You could also forage honeycomb (not sure how much skill it takes so you might have to ask someone to find it for you, and it's daylight only iirc), crush the honeycomb in a mortar, dry it in a wayerd pyramid, heat the wax on a stove, buy a candle mold from Chizili's (the alchemist in Crossing near the empath guild) and make your own candles. That's doing it the hard way. https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Candlemaking

I'd ask someone to put some candles in the cleric donation chest.

Candlemaking does sound fun! Alas, Olwydd.com says honey comb takes 200 ranks to forage up which is... kinda ridiculous, no? And the only place to buy them according to the wiki is Theren. Rats.

I'm sure you could find a million people around Crossing to forage honeycomb for you, if not buy you candles from Riverhaven. At least until candles are stocked at the Crossing shop.

Ah! Thanks for that. I found the merchant. Strange that it's not the wiki map. He sells a fancy altar candle for 5 silver (The one in Riverhaven is 1 silver and some change) along with some food. For that price, I hope it works. Some unfortunate rats will need to die for it.

If you need help buying things as a young Cleric, feel free to ask Liurilias for assistance. He makes semi-frequent stops in the Gathering Hall of the Cleric's Guild.

Thanks for the generous offer. So far I've been playing as independent as possible mostly because I hate bothering folk for help if it's something that can be done on my own, but it's sure nice to know there are people willing. On that note, I am happy to announce that Enalen was able to buy her fancy altar candle and is now cozily aligned with her favorite deathly aspect.

I still think Brother Durantine should consider giving that old monk some competition with cheaper, less fancy candles for the neonates though.

Always feel free to ask any elder clerics. I know just today I put in a bunch of extra things in the donation chest in the guild like a few candles.

While I can respect the attitude of wanting to do it yourself if you can, I routinely buy 20 or so candles and dump them into the charity box. I think I've used a single candle in the last year.^^
