I want to say there was a bug with one of these, where you needed to just use the say command to trigger the system removing your ability to use ask, and similar commands.

Anyone else know what I'm talking about, or am I a rampaging idiot (yes, I know, I am anyway)?

Yes, it wouldn't wear off until you attempted to say something after the timer expired. I think it was fixed, but it's been forever since I blew one of those traps so I can't say for sure.
