Trying all the bard shop instruments in Crossing it seems only the lyre is made for novices to actually learn any skill.
Would anyone know a good list of easy to use instruments for a novice bard?

I believe Aveda has such a list. I know that she devised the Reckus scripts to help with training.
Now, you might find that a tin whistle and a set of spoons will help you with winds and percussions. Just stick with playing halting scales for a while. Then you can switch to the harder moods.
Good luck!

I tried playing scales off-key with a tin whistle an ocarina and a tambourine, all listed in the shop as easy instruments, but they barely move my skills.
For example, when playing the tambourine my percussion skill went from 4.00 learning
to 4.05 clear. Umm, even after playing it three times in a row, learning was the most I got and the skill got to 4.10. Not exactly the sort of learning Id expect from a primary skill using the easiest instrument in the shop.

Blech, you're right, Shavs. I must've switched them around when I was running my experiments last year.
As far as beginning instruments, you want a lyre, a guiro (go through the curtain in the Crossing instrument shop), and a txistu (from the wandering peddler in Riverhaven [ASK him ABOUT WARES]). Those are the easiest of each instrument type.
I've actually just gotten done re-doing the difficulty progression for the lower levels in Reckus (it was still giving some noobs the infinite loop of dewm), so it should work much more reliably for those low ranks.

The easiest wind instruments to play is the txistu. It's available from the peddler in Riverhaven. The easiest percussion instrument is the guiro. I vaguely recall that it is available in the back room of d'Oro but it also might be one of the peddler's instruments. The peddler also sells zills, which are, likewise, very easy. For those first few ranks, ocarinas and tamborines are just not very good choices, in spite of their availability.

You know, it'd be so much better if it was actually negative calories. Perhaps in the next installment?
