I've tried everything I can think of to play this instrument and still can't figure it out. I could use a bit of help.

Hi Tabia. I checked it out, and the ghironda is played like every other instrument: PLAY <type>. For example, PLAY SCALES. You can use PLAY HELP in game to see more information.
