Here is a One Handed Stringed 05/30/2009 03:45 PM CDT
Since the need for a one handed stringed instrument isn't really around IRL, finding a RL example has proven very difficult. However, in Elanthia, there is a very real need for such an instrument. So I have created one.

As for the name... well, I don't see why it can't be an IC thing that Issus invented it. ;) As bards are both instrument masters and (at least eventually going to be) creation masters, it would make sense for a Bard to create this. Issus is that bard :)

Okay, here's my addition to the one-handed instrument suggestion pile. I can't draw much more than stick-men, and since there was talk of ASCII cutscenes and the like... here's my ASCII drawing of what I'd like to see!

The way this straps on currently in my drawing isn't going to be stable enough to work, but I'm sure there's a set of straps that would do just fine. The concept is otherwise the same.

This is me, posting my love for the one handed string instrument ideas.

If you build them, we will play them.

Nice pictures everyone! Evran's suggestion is pretty much how I picture a one handed string instrument. A small harp with raised strings strapped to a body part, either the arm, waist or chest. Probably just something with a single octave range, nothing fancy, but it would allow you to hold a melody for enchantes and one handed practice.

But there's a tree, of many, one,
A single field which I have look'd upon,
Both of them speak of something that is gone:
The pansy at my feet
Doth the same tale repeat:
Wither is fled the visionary gleam?
Where is it now, the glory and the dream?

Looked at the pics - they look really nifty.

I'll have a chat about it. Understand that it would be much much easier with a one-handed example from RL, but having some diagrams of what one could look like, even if it doesn't exist in RL, does help.

If you want a simpler model, imagine a sort of cestus (brass knuckles)-like device that is anchored on the pinky and thumb, with the soundboard and strings running along the palm with the remaining fingers being in position to curl down and pick the strings.

If you want to get gnomishly technical, perhaps this device could have some sort of amplifying device worn on the hip--and because it's gnomish in design maybe it has a chance to accidentally shock you from time to time.

A worn Dan tranh can be played one-handed. Mind you, it will not have as much emotion as if you were to use your off hand for ornamentation; however it can be done. I imagine it could be worn on the hip or belt and playing it one-handed would merely function under a penalty similar to if you were to play it while wearing hand armor.
