Songbooks 12/06/2014 05:37 PM CST
Any idea when (Or even if?) songbooks will be fixed? I have the one auctioned off at the 2013 HE fest and it's still useless. It has been this way since it came off the auction block for a few thousand platinum.

I think I have a fix for this, but it's something I have to play around with first to make sure nothing's horrifically broken.

IN theory it should be a simple update to just make it match the new 3.0 stuff. I'll be testing it this weekend and early this week, actually.

If you need anyone to test it, drop me a line in Plat or have someone shoot me an IM. I can always log on as Bardzilla and test out his fest songbook so Prime stays nice and safe (and I don't think anyone else active in Plat even has a songbook).

Uzmam! The Chairman will NOT be pleased to know you're trying to build outside of approved zones. I'd hate for you to be charged the taxes needed to have this place re-zoned. Head for the manor if you're feeling creative.

So. Half progress. Songbooks aren't yelling at me anymore when I look at them.
They still aren't showing the books correctly as to what you know.

Can someone (or all of you) send (email please) me a log of what you see when you read your songbook?

Depending on what that looks like don't be surprised if you have a songbook if I randomly come find you at some point.

Songbooks screaming at Evike make me think of screamers and this scene from Harry Potter:

Obvi, Evike would never look as horrified as Ron. I would expect confidence with likely consternation.

Much like spellbooks, the code for songbooks is... special. And old.

There's now a fix live that should at least spit back the spells a bard knows. However, I'm straight up going to say that I'm not a coder, and these things really need to be re-written now that I've gone through them (and had someone else look at them) and they aren't going to be something that is going to be a priority at any point in the near future, I'm afraid.

In case anyone is wanting to know how songbooks read now, below is what mine shows. I am glad that they show more information but hopefully we can read details, like with spellbooks, about each of our learned spells...eventually.

You get a black leather songbook with an abstract moonsilver tracery pattern from inside your gloomwood case.

You release the clasp with a faint click and open your songbook to where the cobalt blue silk bookmark lies, the glossy pages reflecting your dedication from their unblemished surface.

The first is for sung/chanted song scrolls. The second is for instrumental-only song scrolls. I don't believe any of the second currently exist, so I would conjecture that the page was put in as a placeholder for a planned feature that never materialized.

For the other instrument types you have to TURN the songbook to the next page after PUSHing it to the appropriate chapter.

I'm a new bard, currently Circle 12, and trying to learn what's up with everything Bard. I saw this discussion about a songbook. Is this something was can buy? If so, where?

Thank you so much.

Also, a question. I have been wondering for awhile how you tune a cambrith item to spells instead of releasing on the cyclical pulse. I now see it's a magical feat I can eventually purchase from the Feats Trainer. My question: Up to that time of purchase the feat to tune a cambrith item to invoke a spell instead of a cyclical, is there anything else we can do to train cambrith?

Thanks for listening!

I'm pretty sure songbooks are only found at certain festivals. There might be some at the next festival, which should be in late spring.

As far as learning Arcana, you have a few options:

1) If the cyclic is teaching you, then using cambrinth with that cyclic should also teach you. This means you'll need to be casting the cyclic at a high enough level to learn, and you'll need to be in the first 5ish minutes after starting the cyclic.

2) You can try to time things so that you miss the pulse. Prep spell, charge cambrinth, wait for cyclic pulse, invoke cambrinth, cast. Since invoking only takes a second, it shouldn't be hard to swing this.

3) Of course, you could just end the cyclic, cast your spell, then put the cyclic back up.

Actually you can buy a songbook from the Leth Bard shop. Just be aware that they are mainly fluff. You get some nice verbs out of them though.

The Leth Deriel songbooks are fluff with nice RP verbs but the songbooks being referenced in the thread are the Quest End Loot or Auction level songbooks that behave similarly to the Mystical Machinations Silver Mists custom spellbooks.

Oh hm, I wasn't aware there was a difference. For what it's worth, I can't see much (if any?) difference between my Leth songbook and this auction one: https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Item:Black_leather_songbook_with_an_abstract_moonsilver_tracery_pattern

The Leth songbook has:

Chapter 1: Known spells
Chapter 2: Memorized Music of a non-Magical Nature (song scrolls)
Chapter 3: Memorized Music of a non-Magical Nature (instrumental songs)
Chapter 4: Cliches cited often by Nagging Non-Bards
Chapter 5: Instrument classes you've mastered

The auction one appears to have a few more opening chapters, though elanthipedia doesn't list what they are. Possibly descriptions of spells? I also checked the verbs, though not exhaustively, and those I checked were the same. It appears neither can be STUDIED for experience as both list STUDY as a fluff verb.

Anyway, hopefully that description will help a bit more.

The fancier songbooks have the same issue, unfortunately, as spellbooks.

Songbooks were meant to be akin to spellbooks for Bards, but, spellbooks themselves have a few more features (the spell scrolls, the notepad, etc). Both the songbooks and spellbooks however, have not played nice with the 3.0 conversion and are something that need to be upgraded, so not all of the functionality is there. I made a quick patch to songbooks to make them kind of work the best I can at the moment, however -- they are still missing some content.

My hope is that when the spellbooks are upgraded, songbooks will be made to be exactly like spellbooks, and the only choice a Bard will have to make is if they want theirs to be called songbook or spellbook.
