These two descriptions seem at odds with each other. I always assumed that the gelapod lived in the pond and hibernated in the depths of the pond during the winter when it froze over. The room description seems to say small natural oasis with a gelapod floating in the pond but the gelapod description says slug in a horse trough of stagnant water.

Like most gelapods, this one is disgusting and ugly, covered in a noxious slime and exuding ungodly scents. Unlike its cousin, the lipopod, the gelapod has a mouth and eyestalks. Though many gelapods are ravenous flesh-eating monsters, this one looks as if it has been domesticated, sitting happily in a wooden trough full of tepid water.

A sign is mounted in front of the gelapod, proclaiming: "PLEASE FEED OUR PET GELAPOD. HE'LL EAT ANYTHING!"

You stand on the bank of a tiny pond in the middle of the square. Cool water laps against the soft, velvety silt that covers the shore, and in the distance you can hear the bustle of the town. Sitting in the middle of the pond is a massive gelapod, looking content and not the least bit aggressive. You also see a domesticated gelapod that appears rather calm.
