Is buying custom made weapons from him supposed to take so long? I just bought a glaive from him and the ticket says it will take ten days before it is ready. That is ridiculous.

Yes to both.
The glaives aren't particularly good stat wise either. And they are heavy. A staff and halberd in common steel are lighter, possibly combined, and way better.
I'd pay 50$ for a stupid forging template for these. I really would love a staff pole swappable.

I think that mechanic was an experiment meant to mimic a customized weapon and the time it would take to forge one and do artistic touches. It's flavor but a little annoying. Unless the design you chose and the glaive noun trumps appraisal stats go with 2 separate forged weapons.
A forged glaive (staff/polearm) crafting template would be pretty awesome.
