... defense orb.

[Ve Aevan Gaenan, The Pillar]
Rising from deep within the pale granite, a steel-like pillar stands with regal dignity, its surface carefully etched with the horned owl of Firulf and the great wolf of Meraud. Its composition strikingly similar to the altar below, the formidable column is capped with a halved sphere of an opalescent mineral whose milky interior swirls with a tamed power. Spacious seating areas rest on either side of this great marker, each perched in silent vigil high above the sacred altar.
You also see a huge cambrinth orb.
Obvious exits: up, down.
> foc orb
The cambrinth orb has been enchanted with an analogous pattern, which appears to filter any charge it comes into contact with into "neutral" spell energy. This will allow anyone to charge the orb without risk, but at a considerable loss of efficiency.
You are positive that the cambrinth orb contains an almost full charge.
R> charge orb 10
The cambrinth orb explodes violently!

Luckily it's a magical holy orb, so it doesn't actually disappear, but it is buggy and explodey.
