Hui Hang caravan trail, Anhui and Zhejiang Provinces, China

Sometimes called the Hui Hang Ancient Road, or Hui Hang Gu Dao, the caravan trail crosses the boundary between Anhui Province and Zhejiang Province. Once used as a trade route, primarily for the exchange of tea and grain, it’s now a trekking route for visitors looking to follow in the footsteps of merchants from centuries past.

The trail passes through a variety of landscapes, including bamboo forests and steep mountain passages such as the portion seen in this photo. A two-day hike along the trail can take you from a village in Jixi County in Anhui Province, to an end point outside of Hangzhou in Zhejiang. Of course, if you’ve traveled all the way to China for the hike, you can take as long as you want to walk the caravan trail.
